Amaya Jiwe is a female Human who is a member of the Legends and a former member of the Justice Society of America known as Vixen. After witnessing the death of Rex Tyler, she decided to align herself with the Legends to get their assistance in her mission to hunt down the mysterious time traveler who killed Rex. She is also the grandmother of Mari McCabe, the Vixen of the present, and Kuasa. She was killed by Leonard Snart in the altered reality created by the Legion of Doom. However, due to the remaining Legends preventing this reality, she never died. During a mission she has been known as The Dread Pirate Jiwe.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Amaya Jiwe was born in Africa in the Zambesi Village. As a child, Amaya wanted to be a police officer despite female law enforcement being generally unheard of. She also read about Chicago in the 1920s from several of her mother's magazines, and wished to see it.
In her adulthood, Amaya was given the Anansi Totem, which gave her the ability to channel the power of any animal in existence. This item had been previously used by her mother and her grandmother.
World War II[]
In the the 1940s, during World War II, Amaya was recruited into the Justice Society of America, a secret organization dedicated to opposing the Nazis and to join the Soviet Union and the United States. While serving, Amaya would grow very homesick and often worry about the safety of her village without her there to protect it. Against the JSA's discouragement to fraternize however, Amaya and the teams' leader Rex Tyler/Hourman fell in love, and planned to leave the JSA once the war was over. While on stake outs Henry Heywood/Commander Steel would sing for the team and often tried to get Amaya to sing along, with no success. She also became close with Todd Rice/Obsidian who she, unlike most of civilization at the time, didn't look down upon for being homosexual.
In 1942, the JSA discovered several individuals, the Legends, posing as OSS agents and confronted them. They claimed they were trying to protect Albert Einstein but the JSA were unconvinced. They also claimed to know about Rex Tyler though he'd never mentioned him which they stated was due to time travel, but a fight broke out soon after. Vixen engaged Sara Lance/White Canary and swiftly overpowered her, while other JSA members took down the other individuals. In their headquarters Hourman observed the captives arguing over their predicament in custody, but he claimed to have never met them before. Vixen suggested imprisoning them in Leavenworth. Vixen and Steel visited the captives but Nate Heywood was able to confirm he was Steel's grandson, confirming their claim as time travelers. The team was brought to Hourman and told him how they met in 2389 but Hourman, as he hadn't lived through these events yet, didn't believe them. Upon learning that Baron Krieger had been spotted in Paris, Vixen volunteered to fly ahead and record Krieger's movements. Amaya attended a club but was surprised when Ray Palmer/The Atom joined her in a dance and informed her that a timeline change would result in all the JSA members being killed, but Amaya suggested that it could've been caused by the Legends instead. When Ray punched a Nazi officer, Amaya joined in the counterattack until the JSA arrived.
Aboard the Waverider, Amaya then suggested to the rest of her team that having the Legends as backup might help, as well as keep them out of trouble. When Gideon provided a map of the Fontainebleau Forest, Amaya quickly recognized it, noting Krieger's men were studying it earlier. Vixen later told Ray that her cover was blown and she could never go undercover in Paris again, and expressed her opinion that he wasn't really a hero given that he wears a suit rather than have powers.
After tracking down Krieger the JSA and Legends attacked his convoy and stole the amulet he'd obtained. However, Krieger used a super serum and became stronger and the two were left unconscious, and apprehended by Nazis. While Ray offered to help Krieger make more serum in exchange for their safety. Shortly after the JSA and Legends attacked the compound and Ray used this chance to attack the captors, allowing himself and Vixen to free themselves. In the hallway Vixen and Ray ran into Mick Rory/Heat Wave and White Canary, who returned Vixen's amulet, and they escaped the compound. After retrieving the amulet the JSA parted ways with the Legends and returned to their headquarters. Later the night however Vixen found Hourman dying and he told her his final words "time traveler" and died in her arms, much to her heartache.
Following the Legends[]
Believing that Mick was responsible for killing Hourman, Vixen snuck on board the Waverider and incapacitated most of the Legends and attacked Mick. Before she could kill him Nate, who'd recently become a meta-human after Ray injected him with Krieger's serum to save his life, knocked her out. She was placed in the ship's jail chamber.
After a discussion of her motives with Sara Lance, she decided to temporarily join the Legends on their travels, hoping to find the rogue time traveler that has been responsible for Rex's death, as well as multiple historical aberrations. On her first mission with the Legends, Amaya traveled to Feudal Japan, where she and Sara fought to protect the village of Yamashiro family from the devious Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
The Legends then tracked an aberration in 1863 caused by a time pirate's bioweapon. When Union spy Henry Scott was killed by a horde of Confederate zombie soldiers, Jax and Amaya snuck onto the Collins Plantation to complete his mission. Jax got caught so Amaya went in to rescue him and Collins' slaves. Although the slaves were skeptical of a break out, Mary recognized the Zambesi totem and put her trust in Amaya with the other slaves following suit. Amaya led the slaves to safety in the midst of an attacking zombie horde. When she regrouped with Jax, they looked onto the plantation burning down before leading the freed slaves to General Ulysses S. Grant's camp.
Soon after their victory in 1863, the Legends tracked another aberration, this time in 1987. Intent on willing to see what had happened to the Justice Society, Amaya decided to take Nate along in order to familiarize her with the time period. Once they arrived, they found it to have been abandoned and desolate, only to be then attacked by a mysterious figure. He reveals himself as Todd Rice/Obsidian, Amaya's old teammate who reveals then revealed the fate of the organization. After the trio discovered a bomb in the White House, Rice went in pursuit of the man responsible, Damien Darhk. The former, however, is severely wounded after Amaya is targeted. Todd was healed and Amaya suggested that he come along with us but he told her that he had someone in his life now and told her to not be afraid to find a life outside her duties. After saying her goodbyes to him, she told Nate about his grandfather's singing voice.
Shortly after stopping the bomb, an aberration caused by the attacks of a man called Quentin Turnbull is tracked. It was revealed that he had in mind to stop the US Army by blowing up a train that was to bring them to the West as well as being in possession of dwarf star alloy. Along with Mick, Amaya was assigned to discovering any information about Turnbull before Jonah Hex then decided to personally take him in. After Nate was severely injured, Amaya and Mick fled to the mine and managed to stop it despite Turnbull's forces upon them. She then had a heart-to-heart talk with Mick over taming the animal within him.
The team was later called to late 2389 caused by the arrival of alien life on Earth known as the Dominators. Amaya was left along with Nate to take care of the Waverider while the others were summoned upon helping out with the situation back on Earth. After Ray, Sara, Oliver Queen, Typhuss James Kira, John Diggle, and Thea Queen made their way out of the aliens' mothership, Nate and Amaya managed to save them from the army of ships that had been trailing behind them. Amaya was then deployed thereafter to Oregon in 1951 along with Mick, Nate, Cisco Ramon, and Felicity Smoak to interrogate one of the the Dominators on their intentions to invade Earth. However, before any kind of action were to be done, the trio from the Legends team were tranquilized by a group of men led by a mysterious figure.
They were eventually saved by Cisco and Felicity, before everyone ultimately chose to save the Dominator in an intent to reveal that meta-humans were innocent of harm. Having been revealed to be both Cisco and Barry Allen's fault of the alien invasion, Amaya then joined the rest of the group in fighting off the Dominator army. After having won the battle, she was honored by the new U.S. President along with the other heroes for their courage and later united in celebration before returning to their normal lives.
The Spear of Destiny[]
Shortly after their triumph over the Dominators, the team tracked yet another aberration to 1927. After Prohibition agent Eliot Ness was found to have been a target of Al Capone's time-traveling allies, Amaya was deployed with the rest of the team (with the exception of Sara and Mick). Having heard stories from her mother over the beauty of Chicago in the 1920s, she was able to enjoy the scenic view before being distracted by the news of Ness' capture. The team was then able to intercept Capone's men and Amaya then dove to rescue the almost dying Ness and found him to be breathing. Sara and Martin Stein were then captured later at Capone's club, worrying the rest of the team.
Soon after Capone's location was tracked and both Stein and Sara were rescued, Rex's killer followed closely disguised as Stein himself into the Waverider. Amaya then told Mick how her motives for going after the speedster weren't for vengeance but justice; however, their conversation was short-lived after Mick saved Amaya from the speedster's path. With Amaya having taken an anti-speedster weapon and Rory tricking the speedster into grabbing the Askaran Amulet, Rex's killer then held her at his mercy before he was forced to flee the ship. With gratitude, Amaya later gave Mick a gift of liquor from Capone's warehouse and kissed him on the cheek as a symbol of their bond.
Nate was working late into the night trying to find more information about the medallion but his work had kept both Amaya and Ray from sleeping. He told them that he was trying to find out what their enemies were up to and dubbed them the Legion of Doom. Amaya looked at the diagrams of the medallions that he had and matched them up to see that they were one and the same. Nate then realized that the medallion was the key to locating the Spear of Destiny which had the power to re-shape reality. She went with the team when they detected an aberration in 1967 that was linked to Darhk and Merlyn. They ran into Rip Hunter on a film set but Darhk and Merlyn began to attack to try and take Rip but he was arrested. Sara, Mick and Stein managed to go and get Rip back though his mind seemed to have been reprogrammed.
In the Waverider's library, Amaya seemed to realize that Ray and Nate seemed to feel different and were losing touch with their scientific and historical expertise respectively. They then saw that Rip's movie producer was George Lucas and both of them knew the name but couldn't remember why. Amaya then learned that they had caused an aberration where George Lucas quit film school and didn't make the movies that inspired both Ray and Nate. She along with the two of them went to find Lucas and encourage him not to drop out of film school but Darhk and Merlyn arrived and took them prisoner. They learned that George Lucas had the spear fragment that Rip had but had thrown it in the trash. They were then taken to the city dump and were forced to look for it. They found the spear but knew they would be killed if they handed it over. Amaya then tried to help Lucas be inspiring him to go back and make movies and he shouted that what he wanted to do with his life was direct.
Amaya renewing Lucas' inspiration for film making fixed the aberration and when the rest of the team arrived, they were able to push the two former league assassins back and steal the medallion from them. However, the speedster arrived and turned the tide of the battle. Rip tried to distract the Legion by pretending to have his memory back, but the act was quickly seen through. They then watched as Rip was captured in the chaos. Amaya checked the timeline and saw that all of Lucas' films were back. Nate and Ray then invited her to have a movie night with them as they watched George Lucas' films.
The team wondered why the Spear of Destiny would need a sprinter when he had extraordinary abilities that could change reality. They also wanted to know what the Doom Legion's plan was and what the re-acquired Askaran Amulet was hiding. Martin brought his daughter to the ship, who solved the mystery of the artifact and, together with Palmer, tried to connect it to the Gideon system. In the meantime, the girl learned from Mick that he was an aberration, which temporarily spoiled the atmosphere on the ship. Martin, however, did not give up and said as Jax had advised his feelings for her, restoring his old relationship.
Nate and Amaya were preparing a meal on the Waverider, getting very close together when Gideon discovered the aberration in 1779. When the Legends found out that this one was related to George Washington, they decided to straighten the story by meeting a soldier at a prom the day before Christmas. Nate and Amaya were supposed to pretend to be married, thus arousing admiration. However, when the man was found and was about to be taken by Sarah to safety, Rip Hunter shot the woman and used a device that turned off all technology within a radius of several hundred kilometers, immobilizing the Waverider. In addition, Rory and the future president were kidnapped and Jax took over the command of the team. Jiwe and Heywood decided to find their friend, but were attacked by several bandits along the way, which resulted in Nate falling into the river. The chilled warrior was caught by Amaya, who took him to a nearby abandoned tent. The girl was going to warm her friend's body with her body, but eventually the two spent the night together. In the morning, when Washington was about to be hanged, Vixen and Citizen Steel found the camp and helped Rory free George. After saying goodbye to the warrior and taking technology from the future, the team returned to the ship, where they celebrated Christmas. During it, Nate gave Amaya a gift in the form of red shoes and heard from the woman that she liked him very much, but that the band members should not romance each other.
When Gideon found the Spear of Destiny in 3000 AD, the team made its way to its last location. There, however, to their surprise, only found Charles dead. Soon after, the Spear was targeted again in 507, where the heroes encountered Camelot's knights, led by Guinevere, who led the newcomers to the castle in front of the round table. After allying with King Arthur and discovering that Courtney is the local Merlin, the legends decided to get a piece of the artifact that the girl was protecting. All the time Amaya tried to convince her friend to give the artifact back and come back with them, but the woman did not want to come back because she found a new home here, falling in love with the king. During a feast in the castle, the king entered the building and captured the Black Knight. However, it soon became apparent that Arthur's brain was controlled by Hunter and Darhk, who issued an ultimatum - either the townspeople would return the artifact for goodness within 24 hours or Camelot would fall. Despite the Legends recovering a fragment of the Spear, the heroes decided to turn back and together with Palmer to defend the castle, thereby capturing Rip and locking him in a cell on Waverider.
When Rip got out of the cell, he put the entire team upright. After destroying the amulet, the heroes captured a former friend from whom they wanted to know where the last fragment of the Spear of Destiny was. Hunter's actions, however, resulted in the Waverider's crash landing during the Cretaceous Period and the falling off of a piece of the ship that had grounded the team. Amaya and Nate and Ray set out to find the missing piece while the rest of the team tried to restore Rip to normal. Along the way, the three travelers encountered many dinosaurs who thought they were tasty. Nevertheless, they made it to Palmer's old hideout, where they spent several hours resting. There, Ray, seeing that Nate was drawn to Amaya, confessed that their relationship was meaningless due to the future of the woman who would become Mari's grandmother. When the team resumed their search and Ray took the Waverider piece, it was followed by the Tyrannosaurus, on whose path Amaya stood. The woman adopted the ashe of her kind and "talked to her", thus saving her friends. After returning to the ship and fixing it, the team welcomed old Rip and set off for the last piece of the Spear of Destiny.
Legends searched for Henry in 1970 - where Rip had dropped the man. Initially, the team had trouble finding the hero, but found him at NASA working on the Apollo 13 project. After the meeting, Nate and Amaya couldn't believe they were meeting him again, and asked for the location of the last piece of the Spear of Destiny. As it turned out, Henry placed the piece in the US flag and gave it to Neil Armstrong, who placed it on the moon. Part of the team decided to stay on Earth, and some went to a satellite. There, Nate gave his grandfather arduous hopes that he would return to his family, but Amaya eventually told him the truth, as is the case with time travel. In anger, young Heywood revealed to the woman information about her future and what would happen to the Zambesi. The team finally managed to obtain the artifact, but due to damage to the Waverider, they could not smoothly enter the Earth's atmosphere. Their landing could have ended up burning if Henry hadn't sacrificed himself and opened the hatch in the hold to equalize pressure and temperature. After that, Nate apologized to Amaya for what he had told her earlier, then decided to go to his house and think it over. The woman, however, wanting to know more, asked Gideon to show files from her future.
Amaya and her team traveled to the Legion's headquarters, where they stole parts of the Spear of Destiny. After returning to the ship, it merged into one element again. The heroes' goal was to destroy a powerful artifact, when Mick discovered on it the Latin inscription "natum de sanguine - perditas a sanguine", which Nate translated. Thus, the heroes had to obtain the blood of Christ in order to destroy the Spear of Destiny. To this end, they went during the First World War to a man who had some idea about it - John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. After persuading the man to help, the team followed their written footsteps, encountering the Legion on its way with Leonard Snart drawn from 2015 - before joining the legends. Despite the complications, the team found the blood of Christ on the battlefield between France and Germany during World War I. In order to obtain the artifact, Hunter and John persuaded the soldiers to make a temporary ceasefire. The legends gained blood, but were attacked by the Legion, to which Mick and the Spear passed. Amaya's plan was to use the artifact to end it all - she wanted to save her village, but still didn't turn over to the enemy's side. Upon returning to the ship, the team tried to understand what they had done wrong and tried to console that the enemies might not know how to use a powerful weapon.
Alternate reality[]
When the Legion of Doom rewrote reality Amaya and Sara were under the employ of Damien Dahrk as his hitmen, the pair of them having killed all of Star Cities vigilante's including The Green Arrow, Spartan, Black Canary, Red Arrow, Artemis, Wild Dog, Ragman, Felicity Smoak and even The Flash.
The pair were eventually freed from their mind control and worked together with the rest of the Legends to undo the Legions nightmarish reality. During a battle between the Legends and the Legion Amaya came into possession of the Spear of Destiny and began to use it to rewrite reality to the way it was supposed to be however she was brutally frozen to death and shattered by Snart before she could finish the incantation.
After the Legion were defeated and returned to their own time periods with their memories wiped Amaya was reunited with Nate and the rest of the Legends. She decided that whatever destiny had in store for her back in 1942 could wait as, due to having a time machine, she could return whenever she wanted without harming the timeline.
Return to 1942[]
Not long after defeating the Legion, because of the manner in which they had done so, the Legends discovered that they had accidentally broken time, with multiple anachronisms existing throughout Los Angeles and the timeline at large. They were nearly attacked by a displaced T-Rex when it was sent away through a time portal made by Rip Hunter. He explained that he had established a new organization called the Time Bureau and they were at work clearing out the anachronisms. He then relieved the Legends of their duties. Amaya went to Central City with Nate and lived with him for a while until his birthday. When Nate left to pick up some donuts for them, she had seen a news report of her granddaughter Mari being caught on camera in Detroit. She then left Central City without a word to Nate and traveled to Detroit to see her. She witnessed Mari save five people in the span of one night who was unaware that her grandmother was watching. Amaya then went to find Rip Hunter and learned that Mari still existed because time hadn't solidified but if she stayed too long in 2390 then she would vanish. Amaya then asked him to send her back to her village in 1942 to prevent that.
At some point during her acting as the guardian of her village it came under attack by a group of poaching soldiers. Using her apparently increased powers she conjured the spirits of several animals to savagely kill the attackers, smiling as she did so.
Return to time travel[]
Sara uses a jump ship to visit Amaya seeking her out, since the anachronism in 1870 turned out to be a sabertooth tiger. Amaya was reluctant to return as she knew at times she lost control and let her totem overtake her, though she eventually agreed. She then reunited with Nate. However, things are salty between them. Declining to talk to her, Nate ended up passing out in the cargo bay, where he was found by Sara, Mick, and her. After finding Ray and Jax dressed as conjoined twins in the circus tent, she and Nate attempted to free them, but were in turn captured by Barnum's troupe. While in captivity, Nate expressed how mad he was at her for leaving him on his birthday to go back to Zambesi. Amaya revealed to Nate that she had gone to Detroit to see Mari first before going to Rip to send her back to 1942 to prevent Mari from disappearing.
When the crowd began to lose interest in the performance, Barnum coerced Nate into "steeling up" by first threatening him, then Amaya. Barnum then shot Nate multiple times despite Nate's protests, angering Amaya to the point where she attacked Barnum, driving him out of the tent. Before she could kill him, Nate talked her out of it, reminding Amaya about her past with the JSA. They made their way back to the Waverider, where Amaya revealed to the Legends her lack of control over her powers. They told her that they would support her and help her get back on track, leaving Amaya to conclude that they were right, then opting to stay with the reformed team.
Nate and Professor Stein tried to help Amaya's ailment, but both looked for the cause in different ways. Martin saw a scientific background to it, while Heywood looked for a mystical solution. However, the study was interrupted by an alert from Gary's agent received by Gideon changed the plans of the team, which traveled to Seattle in 2442. There, they found out about a mysterious woman, chasing a resistance hacker, whom they had discovered. The girl, however, exposed them and ran away, not trusting them. After successfully retreating aboard the ship, Nate decided to focus on helping Jiwe by ingesting a decoction of the root of a rare hallucinogenic plant. The man had to deal with controlling the Waverider after all, but he was acting stoned and unable to make full use of his wits. During this time, the session helped the woman understand the problem of her totem, having the opportunity to talk to the ancestor's manifestation. When Amaya regained consciousness, she helped save Zari Tomaz from the mysterious woman, and after returning to the ship, thanked Heywood for his help and despite his fears, she decided to stay on the team, not for him, but for Zari - a new member of the team who controls the totem she had recruited to the team.
Palmer was trying to improve the team relationship when he suddenly disappeared from the deck. As it turned out, he was murdered in 2358, so the heroes immediately went to Ivy Town the day before his disappearance and took up the case. The team split, and each looked after the friend's young version, discovering that he had changed significantly: he was stealing, truancy, all in order to take care of Gumball, the child of the Dominators. As if that were not enough, the alien was hunted by Agent Smith and his mother - the Dominator Queen. Nate himself was infatuated with his friend's mom, and when it turned out she was in danger, he immediately went to help her. On the spot she began to seduce him, but Amaya, who noticed the trick, interrupted the courtship. The mother of an alien whom the legends defended was said to be a woman. Zari and Ray's time remainder pulled a young Palmer version and an alien from the lab, then returned it to their mother who took the baby and flew off Earth. Legends decided for a short time to stay in 1988 and support young Ray at a Halloween party, scaring the children who harassed him.
Zari was in her room cleaning when she was approached by Amaya. Amaya wanted to talk with her about her totem but Zari was short with her about it. When Amaya pointed out that it was her brother's legacy, she angrily pointed out that she didn't want to talk about her brother especially when she and the others were telling her that she couldn't save him even though she now had a chance to. This ignited her totem that seemed to resonate with Amaya's and she explained that the reason she hadn't returned to Zambesi was that the two of them were connected. They then went to the bridge where she met Rip Hunter. Rip Hunter explained to them that he was on the hunt for an evil being by the name of Mallus and the vampire attacks were connected to him.
When Nate had been kidnapped by Sir Henry Stein, Zari went with the team to infiltrate the Order of the Shrouded Compass and rescue him, as well as find the rogue vampire. She infiltrated the club with the team and she was asked to sit for a seance with Nora Darhk. Zari's disbelief was evident to her and she told Zari that she too was a skeptic before she realized her power. Nora then went into a trance and Zari heard her speak out in her brother's voice. Zari then heard her younger brother say that it was her fault that he died as she didn't protect him and had run away. Zari tearfully tried to plead to her brother but Amaya broke the seance up. Back at the ship, Zari told Amaya that she did indeed run and left her brother to be killed by A.R.G.U.S. She also didn't want her totem anymore as it was a reminder that she should've died that day, not her brother. However Amaya told her that she was chosen by the totem and maybe it was her mission to stop a dystopian future she lived in from ever happening.
Since recent events, Nate has worked on finding another Darhk lead, finding an anachronism in 1937 in Hollywood. The heroes immediately went there, discovering Helen of Troy, who was their target, on the set. Her ability, or rather the "beauty curse", forced her to flee and join K&B Pictures. The team went to the college prom where Helen was to be introduced, but there they discovered that Damien Darhk himself was her agent. The man was not going to fight the legends, wanting to compromise. Sara, however, disagreed, took Helena to the Waverider and ran away with her friends, but before that, Amaya had a moment to talk to Kuasa. When things seemed to be going their way, Martin Stein in Jax's body stood up for Hedy Lamarr and was attacked by Darhk's allies. The legends went immediately to the scene, but Amaya and Zari remained with Helen on the ship to keep an eye on her. Unfortunately for them, Kuasa got on board, stunned Tomaz and started fighting Amaya. During the duel, she revealed that she was her second granddaughter, which made Jiwe stunned. Suddenly, Helena joined the fight, injuring Kuasa, forcing her to flee. Soon after, the team returned to the ship, where it turned out that the enemies had fled and Sarah was seriously injured by Damien's daughter. The captain in a serious condition was taken to the hospital room on the ship, where she began regenerating.
With Sara still unconscious since the last fight, the team decided to tackle another anachronism on their own, encountering those in Vietnam in 1967. Amaya, Ray and Zari went to the camp to talk to the soldier who survived the attack of a certain monster. But Tomaz noticed that they were being watched by a mysterious woman - Anh Ly. She suggested showing them the beast, pointing to its potential and sanctity, and presenting it as a god. As it turned out, the monster was Grodd himself, who intended to restore order in the world, starting with Vietnam. His actions could, however, trigger the Third World War. Amaya broke into his hideout a little later, intending to shrink him with a shrink beam. However, the gorilla discovered her and communicated her pain to her, and then the legends were passed on to fire. But Amaya was not going to give up and told Grodd that she could help him by taking him to a time when humans did not exist. Then he realized that he was dealing with time travelers and decided to take their vehicle. As if that were not enough, Rory burst into the camp with his great great great great grandfather and his army. Dick was going to kill all the campers, but Rory explained to him that it was pointless, threatening him with a gun and saying he had a lot to lose. After all the confusion and the anachronism were over, the team returned to the ship to eat a cake from President Johnson's wife's recipe. After a while, they spotted Sarah, who awoke from her coma to the satisfaction of the team. At the same time, Amaya thanked Palmer for helping him understand that Kuasa doesn't have to be evil and can save her.
Crisis on Earth-X[]
Sara, Jax, Martin and Mick left the band and went to the wedding of Iris West and Barry Allen. Hours later, the other members of the legends were summoned to 2390, so they immediately visited S.T.A.R. Labs besieged by the Nazis. Jiwe and her allies attacked Metallo, eventually defeating him. Then the heroes moved to Waverider, where they began to prepare for a battle with the enemy from Earth-X, when they were interrupted by a message from the evil Oliver, who offered a truce in exchange for Supergirl's life. The heroes, however, did not agree, causing a fight in the streets of the city. It soon became apparent that Overgirl was becoming unstable and could explode, wiping Central City off the face of the Earth. Wells advised Supergirl to take her counterpart high into space, where it was destroyed. Thus, the Green Arrow murdered Black Arrow, ending the war. After picking himself up, Amaya and his friends went to Martin Stein's funeral, to whom they all said goodbye, and then returned to the ship with a new ally - Leo Snart.
Fixing Anachronisms[]
After the loss of Professor Stein, everyone on the team struggled with mourning in their own way. Leo Snart decided to help the crew express their emotions and with the help of a puppet he wanted them to tell Martin the last thing they wanted to say. The idea, however, was quite powerful after such a short time, and didn't work out in the long run, and if that wasn't enough, a powerful anachronism emerged in South America in 1000. The legends immediately went there, discovering that the Vikings worshiped a new god - Beebo - a mascot from the present, and also kidnapped young Stein. The heroes retook the younger version of their friend and returned to the Waverider, where they learned everything. Wanting to set out and retrieve the toy from a Viking settlement, Sara asked for help from Ava Sharpe, who helped the legends infiltrate the tribe of warriors. Unfortunately for them, Mick was caught stealing the mascot and the battle started, which was interrupted by Damien Darhk who pretended to be the god of Asgard - Odin. Realizing the danger, the legends withdrew to make a plan. The Time Bureau refused to send several agents due to heavy losses in its ranks due to the arrest of Rip Hunter. Despite this, the heroes decided to act, effectively stunning the enemy's daughter and forcing him to flee, which was interrupted by Sara. Darhk, however, used an artifact that allowed him to travel through time, effectively escaping, while Lance was transferred to a mysterious place where she had the opportunity to talk to Mallus. After a while, Ava pulled it out of there, completing the mission. Late in the evening on the ship, Jax planned to secretly leave the team, unable to be a hero and thinking about how to revive Stein. So the friends prepared a Christmas dinner, which they said goodbye to Jefferson, in memory of the fallen.
When John Constantine, an exorcist following the trail of a mysterious demon who knew Sara Lance's name, arrived on board, Amaya and Nate wanted to know the reason for his arrival. As it turned out, this being was Mallus himself, with whom the heroes had been fighting for several months. Consequently, the warriors went to the asylum to learn more from patient Constantine, who turned out to be Nora Darhk herself. Despite this, the heroes decided to help John during another exorcism on the girl, but just then the demon took control over Nora, drawing a rune that carried the exorcist, Sarah and Snart to the past. Meanwhile, Amaya began to fight Kuasa, and Nate, seeing that her friend might fall, froze the enemy, and they both took her to a cell on Waverider. After several hours of argument, Jiwe decided to talk to her granddaughter and offered to help. The woman liked the idea when suddenly Heywood attacked her, seeing the cell open. The opponent turned out to be cleverer and with the help of her abilities she started to water the man. To avoid bloodshed, Amaya put down the gun and admitted once again that she could help her, but Nate would be part of it, so she had to leave him alone. Hearing this, Kuasa decided to trust her grandmother and left the ship. Ultimately, this was not the team's only loss, as Darhk persuaded the younger version of his daughter to let Mallus operate, joining the Order of the Drunken Compass. While the team was back on board safe and sound, Constantine departed, offering his help at every moment, and Leo said goodbye to the legends, believing it was time to return to his world.
On Sarah's orders, Zari was to perform a routine inspection of the Waverider. The hacker, however, decided to slightly modify the Gideon system, adding a program that searches for gaps in the history, so that Tomaz could save her brother and change the future. Unfortunately, the rest of the members returned from the mission, noticing the burnout of the AI core. Captain Lance became furious with Zari, who she ordered to repair the ship. During the repairs, a mysterious substance from the core pipes sprayed into the face of the woman who had fallen into a coma. As soon as the team found Zari, they took her to the medical room and hooked her up to Gideon. For the next few hours, the girl got stuck in a Gideon simulation, thanks to which the AI tried to show Zari that she can trust legends. As soon as she woke up, she was sure she knew her place in the band. From the information obtained from the simulation, she revealed to Sarah the task that Constantine entrusted to Palmer. At the same time, she supported Nate and Amaya in their relationship, and assessed Mick's literary work, suggesting a different ending.
When Sara went on a date with Ava, the Legends followed the trail of the Zambesi totems. The first target was a fire totem, but this one was stolen from the Detroit museum by Damien Darhk. The second course was an earth totem hidden by Blackbeard in 1717 in the Bahamas. Everyone except Zari went to retrieve the artifact, creating the story of "Cruel Captain Jiwe" and immediately afterwards without Mick and Amaya returned to the ship, which turned out to be parked in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle. During this time, the heroes, during a conversation with Blackbeard, came across the Darhks, who, with the help of general Maynard, arrested the legends, taking the Jiwe totem on the occasion. This did not stop the team from going after the lost artifacts only when they had the opportunity. As a result of the fight, Amaya became the target of Mallus, which forced Ray to fire an anti-magic weapon beam at Eleanor. This one shocked the woman, which terrified Damien. The legends seized the opportunity to take the earth totem, fleeing and losing the Anansi totem in the process. The heroine did not care much about losing the necklace, telling Nate that she could finally take a break from the burden she had been carrying for years. Meanwhile, Palmer retreated to the island with the Nora serum, feeling guilty about what he had done to her. As soon as she recovered from the drug administration, she stunned the scientist to Damien's delight.
When the team discovered that the Darhks had kidnapped Palmer, they immediately began their search. In the meantime, Hunter and Wally West appeared on board and decided to help the heroes. Amaya and Zari decided to meditate and try to locate her totem, which would allow them to find a friend. Young West joined the women, but got started badly with them and decided to let go. Soon after, Jiwe and Tomaz entered the nirvana state, learning more about the totems and how they had to work with Kuasa.
At the same time, they discovered that time is Mallus' prison and that creating anachronisms destroys his cell. As soon as they got out of the trance, they informed the team, which during that time managed to discover Ray's location in Berlin in 1962. Kid Flash quickly saved the scientist by stealing the enemy's Fire Totem. As if the problems weren't enough, Director Bennett was murdered by Grodd, automatically promoting Agent Sharpe to his position. Wally, on the other hand, accepted Sara's proposal and joined the Legends, finding his place among the outcasts and misfits.
The team encountered strange changes over time, discovering a great anachronism in Memphis in 1954. Everything was linked to Elvis Presley, who never became "king of rock & roll", prompting legends to try to meet him at his uncle's mass. When Elvis was playing the guitar, Zari's totem went crazy, which forced the heroes to flee to the ship. As it turned out, Presley was the owner of the sixth missing artifact, the death totem. Wally swapped the guitar quickly, but that wasn't enough to fix the course of history. It turned out that thanks to the crystal, Elvis saw his brother's spirit while playing, which gave him the strength to continue making music. This forced Nate to try with Amaya to show Elvis the right way, eventually getting rid of the spirits summoned by the musician. Thus, Heywood showed his beloved atmosphere of rock & roll, while winning the most dangerous totem.
As the anachronisms began to pile up, the team couldn't sit back and watch Mallus grow stronger. So Sarah divided the team into several smaller divisions and sent them to specific places to fix the time. When everyone returned, they found Ray Palmer unconscious and injured, and Mallus-possessed Captain Lance with the Death Totem. The heroes had no chance to fight her, so they took refuge in the medical room. One by one, they tried to stop their friend, but all power to the ship was cut off, preventing the legends from communicating or evacuating. When, after several dozen minutes, they found the wounded Zari, they decided to defeat the totem with a totem, and for this purpose Amaya ordered Mick to use a fire totem, with the help of which they managed to immobilize Sara. This one, however, was still locked in the kingdom of Mallus and only Ava's sincere words made her awake, apologizing to the band for all the confusion.
After Sara went on a personal mission, Amaya was appointed captain. She quickly split the duty, ordering Zari to train Rory and Nate and Wally to speak to Mari McCabe in 2391. When West returned on deck less than an hour later, Kuasa showed up and gave Anansi's totem to her grandmother, revealing that she had earned it through Heywood's sacrifice. Jiwe could not understand what her granddaughter had gone up to and immediately went to the friend's rescue.
There, however, they had to face Eleanor, who was partially seized by Mallus. The demon was unbeatable in its present form, but he focused on Kuasa's betrayal, which he had snatched from the heart of the totem of water, killing her in front of her grandmother. Jiwe was ready to fight and avenge the murder of her granddaughter, but West and Heywood managed to pull her away and escape to the ship. There, Amaya told Nate that she still did not know what she wanted in life and went secretly on Jumpship, with which she went to Zambesi in 2365.
Fighting Mallus[]
Amaya had contributed to preventing her older version from handing her over to her daughter at the ward commissioning ceremony, who did not show up. Soon after, Nate and Wally started looking for a friend who was responsible for everything, who eventually persuaded Heywood to help. Wally was not convinced of this plan, knowing what he had led Barry to with "Flashpoint", but decided to support his friends anyway. After Nate managed to steal the old Amai totem, Jiwe talked to her daughter without revealing her origin. Thus, Esi accepted her heritage, and the three Legends were able to return to the Waverider.
There, it turned out that the team did not mind the anachronism created by Amaya, as they wanted to use the phenomenon to defeat Mallus with their associate Damien Darhk, whose sole purpose was to save his daughter. Together with the enemy, they moved the possessed woman to a village in Zambezi and waited for the demon's release, equipped with totems. The plan, however, failed due to Darhk's release from Grodd, to whom the death totem showed another way to retrieve Nora. Despite the efforts of the heroes, Mallus freed himself mocking the ineptitude of the team.
The Legends, seeing no chance in the fight against the demon, decided to regroup on Waverider. They were helped by Rip Hunter who sacrificed himself to gain them some time. The heroes had to stop despairing and headed to Salvation in 1874, where, as Nate and Amai discovered, they intended to use the power of the wards to create something pure that would stand against Mallus. The first try did not turn out well, which ruined the team's morale. Their quarrel was interrupted by the arrival of Ava with reinforcements of Helena Trojan, Kuasa from the new timeline, and Jax in 2396, who were ready to help fight evil. When the armies of Julius Caesar, Freydís Eriksdottir, and Blackbeard arrived for the totems, the heroes began a fight, joined by Eleanor Darhk and Jonah Hex. As soon as Mallus showed up in person, the team was forced to proceed with another attempt to use the power of the wards. Thus, they created a manifestation of their power, which took the form of Beebo, in which they managed to destroy Mallus. After that, Amaya decided to go back to her time, to which Heywood had escorted her. The woman did not agree to erase her memory and said goodbye to her beloved with a kiss.
Return to Zambesi[]
Original timeline[]
At a later point, Amaya returned to 1942 for good and went on to have a daughter, Esi, who then had two daughters, Kuasa and Mari, the latter of whom also becomes a superhero known as Vixen. Amaya was murdered in 2365 by Benatu Eshu along with her son-in-law so she wouldn't stand in his way of destroying Zambesi Village in search of the Anansi Totem.
Current timeline[]
After the Legends altered the timeline to save Zambesi in 2365 in order to stop Mallus, they created a new timeline where Amaya and Esi stopped Eshu. Kuasa and Mari went on to share the Anansi Totem and the mantle of Vixen.
Legacy[]
Though they didn't show it at first, Amaya's retirement from the Legends had a lasting impact on the team. Her breakup with Nate was a factor that ultimately led him to return to 2391 for a brief leave of absence and eventually retire from the Legends after becoming adjusted to the Time Bureau.
A few months after Amaya returned to 1942, Ray met and became close to the shape-shifting fugitive Charlie during a mission in 1970s London. He told Charlie about Amaya, referring to her as the team's "moral compass". In a desperate attempt to prevent Zari Tomaz and John Constantine from sending her to Hell, Charlie used this to her advantage, transforming into Amaya herself, complete with an Anansi Totem replica. This prompted the Legends to instead imprison Charlie on the Waverider while preventing her from using her powers, leaving her trapped in Amaya's form. Eventually, Charlie decided to become a full-time Legend using Amaya's likeness on the terms that she would never be imprisoned again.
Personality[]
Amaya is a brave and selfless person who is willing to do whatever it takes to protect people. However she can be aggressive and ruthless to her enemies and those she sees as threats to humanity in general, suggesting that they lock the Legends in the darkest hole in Leavenworth and throw away the key for impersonating OSS agents. She is, for the most part, very professional, to the point where she will let unfortunate incidents slide to focus on the mission. However, she can be reckless when someone she loves is hurt or dead, as evidenced by the fact that she stowed away on the Waverider and nearly killed Mick Rory due to incorrectly assuming that he had killed Rex Tyler, indicating a tendency to be impulsive and ruled by emotions like anger on occasion and even have no remorse to hit an elderly person like Martin Stein. After she has cooled down, she decided it would be better for her, as a hero, to arrest the man responsible instead of killing him, demonstrating that she is a self-aware person with good intentions. She is also perfectly willing to admit her faults when she knows she is wrong.
Like most of her team, she didn't think highly of the Legends at first due to perceiving them as being less professional than the JSA, and she even bluntly told them she wasn't impressed with their ship and that Ray wasn't a hero due to his reliance on a suit to defend innocents. However, later on, when Ray sacrificed his chance of having real powers to save Nate, she admitted that what Ray did was heroic, even if she maintained that he wasn't a "super" hero. Out of all the Legends, Amaya respected Sara for her combat skill and was the least impressed by Ray, whom she saw as relying on his suit for power, and Mick, whom she saw as a thief and a criminal; despite this initial impression, Amaya has since warmed up to both and have come to see them as allies. While in the Civil War, she showed great sympathy for the slaves and wanted to help them even if it didn't follow history, proving that she was capable of great compassion. Over time, Amaya seemingly has more friendly with Mick after several instances where he had demonstrated heroic actions and also for saving her from and nearly catching Rex's killer, presenting him with a gift of liquor stolen from Al Capone's warehouse and giving him a kiss on the cheek, winking at him and telling him he isn't a bad guy.
For a time while helping the Legends she was very secretive about her personal life seeing fraternizing as unprofessional given her experience with the JSA, something Nate Heywood picked up on. However after a talk with an older Obsidian in 1987 Amaya became more friendly and open about her past, even sharing stories of Nate's grandfather with him. After talking with Courtney in year 507, Amaya decided to live more than just for her mission, to which she has gained open feelings towards Nate.
After the Legends were temporarily disbanded and Amaya return to her proper timeline, with the knowledge of her homeland and people's future fate, Amaya adopted a more vicious nature to her. Determined to protect her home, she showed no mercy to anyone who would endanger Zambesi Village, taking a seemingly sadistic pleasure from killing the would-be attackers.Powers and abilities[]
Powers[]
- "This totem harnesses the ashe, or the—the life force, of the animal kingdom. It was passed down to me from my mother and from hers before that."
- — Amaya Jiwe to Sara Lance
- Powers via Spirit Totem: All of Amaya's powers come from her totem, which allow her to harness the life force of animals, in essence harnessing their abilities.
- Animal empathy/communication: By manifesting the spirit of the tyrannosaurus rex, Amaya can communicate with other t-rexes and understand their emotions and body language.
- Avatar projections: Amaya can manifest solid energy constructs of the various animals of nature that are able to physically intact with the world, acting as soldiers to aid her.
- Night vision: Through the spirit of a nighthawk, Amaya can see in the dark; this allowed her to spot Obsidian even after he used his powers to block out the light.
- Shield projection: Amaya can manifest a solid shield through the power of her totem.
- Superhuman agility: Through the spirit of the dolphin, Amaya becomes extremely fast and agile in water.
- Superhuman strength: Through the spirit of a gorilla, a rhinoceros, an elephant and a dinosaur, Amaya becomes incredibly strong; while harnessing the spirit of a lion, she is able to unleash powerful clawing-strikes that can launch an armored foe far away. Harnessing the spirit of the elephant allowed her to plow through the Dominators relatively easily. However, Amaya's superhuman strength is inferior to Nate Heywood's, even when she channel the spirit of a gorilla; as the latter overpowered her relatively easily.
- Thermal insulation: Through the spirit of the seal; Amaya is unfazed by freezing temperatures.
- Underwater breathing: Though the spirit of the dolphin, Amaya can breath underwater or at least hold her breath for an extended period, like a dolphin does.
- Wallcrawling: By manifesting the spirit of a spider, Amaya can defy gravity, and crawl along walls and ceilings.
- Totem connection: The totem connects to other totems when in the presence of them.
Abilities[]
- Master hand-to-hand combatant/Martial artist: Amaya is a fifth-degree black belt; this training has allowed her to defeat Nazis easily and hold her own against Sara Lance for a time, although she had to use the spirit of the gorilla to defeat her. She was also able to hold her own against Malcolm Merlyn and pickpocket him to get her amulet back before using the spirit of the gorilla to defeat him.
- Expert knife-fighter/Knife-thrower: In her attempt to kill Mick, Amaya was able to strike with deadly accuracy using a cooking knife, during which time she also demonstrated an ability to seamlessly switch the knife between either hand; she would have successfully used these skills to disable the team had Nate Heywood not manifested his steel form and made himself impervious to her assault. She also demonstrated an ability to throw a shuriken with pinpoint accuracy as well after throwing one into Mick's sandwich to give him proof ninjas existed.
- Expert swordswoman: In Feudal Japan, Amaya proved able to fend off a squadron of elite samurai with a katana alongside Sara.
- Stealth/Infiltration: Amaya is shown to be very efficient in how she moves about while gathering intelligence on suspects. During her mission in Germany, she was able to work undercover while raising no suspicion until the Legends interfered. During her revenge-fueled attack on the Legends, she was able to silently sneak onto the Waverider, where she systematically subdued the entire team before engaging Mick.
- Expert markswoman/Firearms: Presumably taught during her time with the JSA, Amaya is skilled in the use of firearms such as handguns, as shown in the reality created by the Legion of Doom.
Weaknesses[]
- Anansi Totem: While Amaya's spiritual connection with the necklace prevents others from using the totem so long as her bond is stronger. Unlike her granddaughter, Mari, the necklace has not bonded with Amaya so it can be removed from her neck against her wishes, rendering her powerless.
Former weaknesses[]
- Lack of control: After Rip Hunter took her back to 1942, Amaya returned to Zambesi, using her totem to protect the village. However, it was later revealed that whenever she tapped into the Totem's powers, Amaya felt as if the animal was in control rather than herself, causing her to turn unnecessarily violent. However, after drinking tea concocted from a special root from her village, Amaya received a vision of one of her ancestors who explained why the Totem's power is increasing; a threat more powerful than anything she'd previously encountered was coming, and Amaya should trust the totem rather than resist its increased power. With her ancestor's encouragement, Amaya soon regained control over her powers.
Equipment[]
- Vixen suit: Amaya wears a protective suit as her alterego, Vixen.
- Spirit Totem: Amaya's main weapon is the Spirit Totem.
