The Charal-class was a Federation starship type, an Andorian tier 5-rated escort in Starfleet and Andorian Imperial Guard service from the 2400s decade. The design was, together with the Khyzon and Kumari-classes, part of the Kumari Line of escorts. These ships were derived from the 22nd century Kumari-class. Their role was between that of offensive firepower and defensive staying power. In addition, these vessels were equipped with a pair of wing cannon platforms that attacked their parent ship's targets

The hull of the Charal-class escort allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further. The options were designated Andorian, Andorian Type 2, Charal, Khyzon and Kumari. In addition to the standard hull patterns available for Starfleet ships, the escort's components could be patterned in Kumari A and Kumari B, for example.

Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion.
