"All right, we'll pick up local transport there. Will, Henry, you're with me. We leave in an hour. You know he's playing with us, right? He's probably laughing in some café in Paris, about sending us on a wild goose chase to rural Colombia. Why would he do that? Why? You never know why with Typhuss, but he's always up to something. You're not wrong about that, but aren't you at least curious as to what it is this time? It's a set-up, Magnus, a trap. That's what he does, how he rolls, his modus operandi. Yes... What if he's posing as the king of a lost mountain tribe and he wants me for his queen? Or what if he actually needs our help? Fine. I'll get my stuff together. The man comes with a hidden agenda, every time. Every time! That's what makes him so interesting."
— Helen and Will, 2394

Doctor Helen Magnus is a female Human (Abnormal) who is an English-born physician and scientist specializing in a variety of medicine and biological sciences. Currently 291-years-old and 'blessed' with apparent eternal youth thanks to a vampire blood-based serum, she is the founder and elected leader of the Sanctuary Network.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Helen was born in the middle of the 19th century to Gregory Magnus and Patricia Heathering. Her father was regarded as a controversial medical researcher of his time, and exposed his daughter to his profession when she was a child.

Louis Pasteur, a close friend of Gregory, was her godfather.

Helen Magnus 19th century

Magnus in the 19th century

She was an intelligent young woman, unwilling to accept the limitations for women of her era. When Helen reached the age of ~25-years-old , after she had been repeatedly denied entrance into a London school, stopping her from being able to gain the degree she needed to become a practicing medical doctor, Gregory introduced her to the secrets she believed he was hiding from her beneath their house, bringing her into the world of abnormals.

Years later, Helen was allowed the opportunity to study at the University of Oxford. While there, Magnus was essentially isolated as she was the only female student at the school. Despite this, Helen was able to earn the respect and friendship of four fellow male students. All of them became dear and close friends of Magnus' who held a greater respect for her than any other men (especially of that era), and it was with them that she formed The Five.

The Five[]

Sometime in the early / mid-1880s, Magnus formed The Five, a group of extraordinary minds that included herself, James Watson, John Druitt, Nikola Tesla, and Nigel Griffin. Like herself, the others could be considered geniuses ahead of their time, and in this group Magnus and the others felt like they were a part of something more.

In the Spring of 1886, Magnus was able to acquire a sample of pure, untainted vampire blood before the species was exterminated by the Church. Magnus devised a serum from the blood that was discovered to possess unique properties and the group's curiosity about humanity's potential to evolve led them to each take an injection of the blood. Magnus volunteered to go first, to make sure the serum was safe despite her friends' warnings that the side effects of the blood were completely unknown. Magnus survived the injection, though the awakening of her longevity abnormality was quite painful. The other members then took an injection of the blood and also gained their own unique abilities. It is unknown if the other members of The Five were aware of abnormals beforehand.

To her great regret, her lover and fiancé, John Druitt's exposure to the source blood had the unforeseen side effect of driving him insane and led to the creation of the most notorious killer in history - Jack the Ripper. Magnus tried one last time after the rest of The Five had given up on Druitt to appeal to his better nature and to accept her help. However by this time Druitt's insanity had all but consumed the man he once was and he tried to attack Magnus, forcing her to defend herself and leading him to vanish from her life for a long time.

Though The Five would never admit it, Magnus could be considered the group's de facto leader. This is mostly because she is able to keep them in line and keep them focused on the bigger picture. Each man respected her enough to know not to make her mad. In early 2371, Watson and Druitt hinted to Will she may have been their leader when they jokingly asked him what it's like to follow the orders of a woman without having lived through the traditions of the 19th century.

Saving Typhuss James Halliwell[]

On one of her expeditions in 2350, she saved a young Starfleet Cadet, Typhuss James Halliwell from dangerous thugs who were attacking him. (Star Trek: Intrepid special episode: "Tempus")

In 2353, Helen again encounters Typhuss James Halliwell, a third year cadet on Earth.

20 years later Magnus appoints an adult Typhuss, a Starfleet officer, to become her new protégé, which he eventually accepts. (Sanctuary)

Leader of the Sanctuary Network[]

For over 120 years (ultimately giving 5 lifetimes to her work resulting from time travel), Magnus has run the Sanctuary Network, where she tracks, protects and learns from the extraordinary and / or paranormal creatures that inhabit our world. She serves both as head of house of the Old City Sanctuary, and as elected head of the global Sanctuary Network. (Sanctuary)

Magnus personally knew many great figures of history, including H. G. Wells, and Jules Verne, as well as U.S. presidents Teddy Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and at least one of The Beatles. She was aboard the Titanic when it hit an iceberg and sank in 1912, and was in the room when the Nazis surrendered at the end of World War II, mainly because Eisenhower refused to be in the same room as Alfred Jodl. There are also pictures of her with Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Mahātmā Ghandi, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. (Sanctuary)

Four years later in 2371, Selina tried to kill Typhuss again but Helen defended Typhuss from Selina. Helen told Selina "If you ever come near Typhuss again i will kill you, Selina." Selina later left town after the encounter with Doctor Magnus.

Return of Druitt[]

Helen and John

Druitt and Magnus in her study

In early 2370 while working on a case involving the abnormal boy Alexei, Magnus was confronted with her former fiancé, John Druitt. He had managed to infiltrate the Old City Sanctuary by pretending to be unconscious in order to get to Magnus.

While Druitt, like the rest of The Five, had gained some form of longevity, he had recently relapsed with a disease that his own source blood-altered physiology couldn't handle. Only Magnus's pure longevity-causing blood could cure him, as it had in the past.

Magnus however did not want to cure him in the beginning because she believed it would only prolong his suffering with his insanity and tried to offer him help first; not liking that Druitt had teleported Typhuss away from her and into the SHU with a dangerous giant lizard creature in hopes of getting her to comply. This was a perfect example of how deranged Druitt had become if he was putting Typhuss in harms way. Druitt became enraged when Magnus revealed that she never told Typhuss the truth about who John was.

In the end, Magnus appeared to relent and fetched a pure sample of her blood for Druitt to inject. Satisfied, Druitt took the injection but moments later Druitt's power began to turn on him. Magnus had poisoned him, although she obviously felt sorry for her action. But Druitt was not going to go quietly as he looked her in the eye and said "The Five... the others... will come" before teleporting away with the belief that his old comrades would avenge him. Magnus however thought he wouldn't survive for very much longer and would die. It wasn't until later on in Rome that she learned he wasn't dead as she had initially expected.

Pursuing Adam Worth in 1898[]

Helen in 1898

Future-Helen Magnus in 1898 London

In early-2385, Helen Magnus follows Adam Worth back in time through his time portal and pursues him throughout London in 1898 to stop him from curing his daughter Imogene, who is naturally meant to die in the timeline from a rare form of Leukemia. During her pursuit, Magnus tries her best to avoid encountering her past self and is ultimately successful, albeit coming extremely close to getting caught by Past-Helen a few times. Despite this however, Magnus ends up completely failing to stop herself from also encountering Past-Watson, who quickly discovers that she is from the future and promises to keep quiet for the sake of preserving the timeline. When Future-Adam tries to kill Future-Helen after she tracks him down to his small lab, he accidentally kills Imogene instead, restoring the natural order of the timeline. After killing Future-Worth from early-2385, to avoid herself inadvertently changing the timeline by her mere presence in the past with her sheer knowledge of future historical events, Magnus accepts the advice she was given from Past-Watson and ends up supposedly taking a long "vacation" in a known secluded part of the world; hiding on a mountain top in Nepal for the next 488 years before she can resurface and rejoin the timeline to help Will in the present dealing with the mass amounts of Hollow Earth abnormals invading the surface from the three caldera sites.

It is revealed later however that Helen Magnus had instead been secretly working with several important figures of the 20th century, including Albert Einstein and Buckminster Fuller amongst others, in order to build a new Underground Sanctuary.

Stargate Program[]

In 2370, Helen joined the Stargate Program and works with the SGC at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex a Federation military base located a fairly short distance outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado, while Helen still leads the Sanctuary Network, a team that tracks, protects and learns from the extraordinary abnormals, that inhabit our world, one team member is a Starfleet Captain, Typhuss James Kira. In 2384, Helen joined Homeworld Command, under the command of Lieutenant General Jack O'Neill.

After seven years in the Delta Quadrant Typhuss and Helen are finally reunited at the Sanctuary. Helen told Typhuss that she missed him. Typhuss told Helen that he had missed her too and that he was happy to be reunited with her. Helen noted that he had a lot of work to do at the Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary Network goes rogue[]

Helen Magnus Untouchable

So from now on, we make our own rules

In 2386, Greg Addison started having the Sanctuary Network secretly watched in order to find out the whereabouts of the Crixorum, a dangerous abnormal psychic from Hollow Earth. When his plan backfired into a bloodbath in Jakarta, he had himself appointed an inspector and led a team that investigated the Old City Sanctuary. Eventually, Dr. Helen Magnus convinced him that she had sent the Crixorum back to Hollow Earth. As a result, he told her that Starfleet Security was putting him in charge of the Sanctuary Network, otherwise all of its assets in the world would be frozen. To his surprise, Magnus threw him out and threatened that if he returned, she would have him eaten. Magnus was backed into a corner by her political allies and was forced to go rogue with the global Sanctuary Network to ensure its independence. This marks the end of the Sanctuary Network's long-time affiliation with Starfleet Security. Magnus explains to Typhuss that having the Network cut of from Starfleet Security and other external influences was her plan in the first place and has decided that the changes that are coming make it necessary for them to be able to make their own rules. (Sanctuary)

Replaced by a Cabal agent[]

In 2386, while on a mission near a Cabal base Helen is captured by the Cabal and replaced by a Cabal agent. Before leaving for her mission, Typhuss put a viridium patch on Helen's jacket in case Helen got into trouble. (Sanctuary episode: The Helen Magnus Impostor)

In 2387, Helen took the position of assistant chief medical officer aboard the USS Intrepid-A, snice the Intrepid didn't have a assistant chief medical officer 9 years earlier when the Intrepid launched from the San Francisco Fleet Yards.

Xindi[]

In 2388, Helen along with Ezri Dax, Typhuss James Kira and Julian Bashir used the runabout USS Rio Grande to meet with Andorian Captain My'ra Telek, about the Xindi. Telek gave them information on Xindi ships. The next day Julian, Typhuss, Ro Laren, Nog and Samantha Carter had a meeting about the Xindi in the hub. The Xindi wanted to start the war again, Nog didn't understand why the Xindi want to start the war again. Typhuss told everyone that he would lead peace talks with the Xindi. Kira filed for divorce from Typhuss, Kira was lonely and felt that Typhuss wasn't there for her. Julian was at the wedding. Typhuss got married to Sam again. In an alternate timeline, the Federation was at war with the Klingon Empire in 2400. In 2403, after the war was over, the Federation Starfleet was destroyed and was replaced by the new Bajoran Starfleet. Helen joined this new Starfleet with Samantha Carter. By early 2403 Bajor was succumbed to numerous but unsuccessful raids by the Klingon Empire. Bajor had built a large fighter wing division which would defend the planet from the pathetic attempts from the Klingon Empire in attacking the Bajoran homeworld. They had a daughter, Ashley Magnus born in 2371. In 2430 Ashley was killed while on a mission to capture a Abnormal for the Sanctuary Network. Leaving her mother Helen Magnus and her father Typhuss Magnus sad and upset about her death. This timeline cease to exist when Typhuss and his crew won the war against the Xindi. Helen was thrown back in time to 2387 aboard the Ares, an Aurora-class battleship in the current timeline where the timeline was not altered. Helen was found by that timeline's Typhuss James Kira, Samantha Carter and Olivia Benson. Soon after Helen was allowed to stay aboard the USS Intrepid-A by Captain Typhuss James Kira.

Helen became quite close to Typhuss and began a romantic relationship with him sometime prior to 2390. In 2390 as fugitives, Chakotay, Typhuss and Harry found Voyager and "fixed" history.

Personality and traits[]

One of the first things to know and remember about Helen is that she is first and foremost a Victorian woman. While she may not hold high many of the standards expected of a woman from that time it doesn't change her upbringing and overall demeanour, and whilst she has adapted to integrate herself with the changing times she is still the same woman at heart. She is a particularly private person, a mix from her need for privacy in her work, her experiences but also due to her upbringing. Helen doesn't talk freely about her feelings and will take care of others before herself. If Helen does talk about herself or her past it is usually in brief detail and the conversation is rapidly cut short if it takes a turn into matters that she is unwilling to discuss. Even those that Helen considers herself friends with know very little about her life, barring her long-standing friends.

Etiquette is something that Helen holds to the highest regard and will let you know should something that you do or say cross her boundaries into disrespect or bad etiquette. A testament to this was in an alternate timeframe when, even though the world was ending, Helen requested that the young girl that she was with told her her name – stating that “proper etiquette would be to offer your name in return”. Helen also has a lot of pride for herself and her work and does not take kindly to anyone demeaning that or her authority. She's an intelligent woman and very loyal - if she cares about you or you're a friend she will protect you and will do so regardless of any other influences. Helen employs a strong "do no harm" ethic due to her status as a medical doctor and her wish to protect any abnormal and person. She is unwilling to harm or even kill any individual without a spectacularly good reason, often placing her own life in danger above that of whom she would rather save, an example of this being John Druitt whom she has tried to save for over a century despite his actions towards herself and others.

In her work Helen employs some strict sensibilities which aide in protecting both her work and her patients. While she may not relax often, and only takes a weekend long break every seven years, Helen does know how to relax and enjoy herself. She knows how to make light of a situation and has a distinctive sense of humour, though it's only seen when the time is appropriate. As well as being protective over people’s lives she is also protective over their beliefs or interests. Helen has long understood the personal dangers of the job, the lack of being able to communicate it to others (“dinner parties are hell”) and allows her staff the relaxation and personal time that they so need. Her protective nature is also very compassionate and though it may be hard for Helen to relate to others she does truly try.

Helen is a strong woman both physically and mentally. It takes a lot for Helen to lose control over herself in a situation or to act rashly or without calm. One thing, or rather person, which does alter this is Helen's daughter Ashley. Whenever Ashley is in danger, or even when she was kidnapped by the Cabal, Helen fought for her and even placed her work in danger to rescue her daughter. Another individual who causes Helen to lose clarity in situations is John Druitt. Despite his actions Helen was unable to fully sever her feelings for him or truly hate him due to their past, instead burying them deep. Whilst Helen may have feared John when he first came back into her life, his actions and events that unfolded have shown that he will not hurt her or the Sanctuary. While she may not fully be able to trust him, Helen is able to place enough trust in him to allow him to help. Her own actions of wishing to help him shows that she does still care for him also, whether or not she will admit it.

Helen is an incredibly proud woman, something that she has been ever since she was a young girl. One thing that Helen prides herself on most is her knowledge and skills, as along with day to day life she requires them for her work. She is also proud of them because they are statements of what she has accomplished in life and her dedication to what she does. Helen is dedicated not only to her work but also to those that are involved in it. It is her job to protect not only her patients but those that she works with.

Helen is also incredibly stubborn and has admitted that she is incredibly used to gtting her own way, and it has been mentioned that there hasn't been a compromise that she hasn't just steamrollered through. By having worked independently for so long (despite the government funding) Helen has been able to act for herself and built up the Sanctuary Network through her determination. An example of this is when Helen first studied to become a doctor. Despite having the knowledge, skill and becoming licensed the Royal College refused to allow Helen to practise medicine, although that did not cease Helen nor her quest to become a practising doctor. Helen requested that her father share his work with her and began to help him research, later legally practising medicine after further laws changed and she was permitted to do so.

Although Helen doesn't regret her actions that brought about her longevity there are many things in her life and many actions that she has taken that she does regret. She has commented that in her life she has taken many risks, but after having to 'watch' her life for 113 years (after travelling back in time), this has allowed her to see that not all of the decisions that she has made were the best choices ("Watching everything unfold again, for better or worse. Watching every mistake I made play out again. I had to let terrible things happen, Will, and do nothing to change them").

Due to Helen's extended life she has seen the world change many times and knows that she will again. Though she keeps herself apprised of global affairs, mainly to protect the abnormal community, Helen herself is less involved with them than she was in past years. Political affairs also hold less of an interest to Helen and, unless she is specifically asked, she will keep away from them. When Helen is not researching abnormals she makes time to present lectures on varying abnormal theories, though she has been told that her lectures are rather boring.

Helen and Charlotte kiss

Helen Magnus and Charlotte Benoit kiss in 2381

Helen Magnus is bold and straightforward, brave and no-nonsense, yet she remains proudly true to her formal Victorian English sensibilities. Stemming from her British roots, she is a person who prefers to stay busy and can only tolerate a "long weekend doing nothing" once every seven years.

Helen's past is long and colorful, as one would expect from a life lasting 274 years. However, she proves that living forever is not the best of things and finds it hard at times, calling longevity a curse and admits that "dinner parties are hell" as she can't relate to anyone. She has had to bury countless friends, colleagues, and lovers, making her somewhat reluctant to let new people into her heart as she's learned to not get too close to people anymore over the course of the last century. On more than one occasion, Helen has searched for a way to try to reverse the effects of the source blood as she is so often tired of outliving the one's that she loves.

However, she proves that living forever is not the best of things and finds it hard at times. She has had to bury countless friends, colleagues, and lovers, making her somewhat reluctant to let new people into her heart.

She speaks a vast number of languages, including Italian, Zulu, Japanese, Cambodian, Norwegian, French, and Spanish. Helen is fluent in Latin, being that she is a medical doctor/scientist and it's her father's favorite language. Magnus is also able to understand Arabic, Hindi (has knowledge of its ancient Urdu dialect), as well as German and can identify its Bavarian dialect(s). She is also good at reading and translating other ancient and rare languages, such as Cuneiform, Sanguine vampiris script, and Praxian lexicon.

On more than one occasion she is shown to be skilled in hand-to-hand combat.

Magnus is abundantly seen to be very comfortable in holding and being adept at using a wide variety of weaponry, including but not limited to: pistols (revolvers and semi-automatics), rifle(s), an rpg launcher, knives (fixed blade, diving, folding, switchblade, and butterfly; includes being quite deft with a scalpel), a multitude of improvised melee weapons (spear, staff, chain, batons, and hammer; less efficient with a rock and a broken off metal bar), tranquilizer guns (semi-autos firing tranq bullets; an airsoft rifle firing tranq darts), two types of Praxian energy weapons ("whip" and "vaporizer"), and all sorts of tech gizmos that Henry whips up in his weapons lab. She was able to create a bomb/explosion out of lit stores of fuel, and even used the automated assist mechanism to kill intruders. With a brief glance, Magnus can specify weapons, such as Starstreak missiles.

Helen possesses is the ability to operate almost any type of vehicle; she is able to drive cars/vans/SUV(s) and motorcycle(s), pilot planes and helicopters, and can even fully command a tank (pilot and fire).

She is technologically savvy, being able to use and repair a range of analogue and digital devices, is familiar with the Sanctuary's computer system, and can perform piggy-backed hacks. She can get severely damaged and parted computer systems to operate again powered with batteries, as well as able to boost a crashed helicopter's radio distress signal using the inside walls of the borehole of an abandoned oil rig, and can send a long-wave transmission out of old disused radios attached to solar panels. She can also quickly figure out the UI of both Praxian and Vampire technologies.

One of Helen's most impressive talents is the ability to recreate tech devices after only seeing and handling them for a brief period of time: she was able to have Henry recreate the stunner weapon she encountered in the Guardian's alternate timeline. When Helen and Will were trapped in Carentan, she was able to successfully recreate a jerry-rigged version of Adam Worth's time nodes to nullify the time dilation bubble even though she never actually physically spent time working on one of Adam's nodes (Henry and Nikola did; whom the audience can infer relayed their findings to her).

In an implanted perfect dream world, Magnus is an at-home freelance painter who doesn't show her work publicly at art galleries, but instead prefers to sell her work privately to buyers through her agent.

Helen prefers the term lovers rather than boyfriend and girlfriend when dating someone. One issue she was particually touchy about being dismissed as simply a "bureaucrat".

Magnus is bisexual. (Sanctuary)

Helen is a polymath.

Altered physiology[]

Presumably due to the affects of the Source Blood giving her a unique blood chemistry, besides having Longevity, Helen seems to require a lot less of certain things than a normal human being does to still be able to properly function. This includes:

  • Sleep - She frequently stays up very late at night , saying that she rarely sleeps unless her patients do too.
  • Warmth - She is seen to be able to tolerate being in cold temperatures better (air and water).
  • Food - Occasionally, when stressed or very busy working on a demanding issue, Helen is seen to intentionally forgot / accidentally forget to eat regular meals; eating very little to nothing at all for an extended period of time lasting for several days up to a week. She survives mostly off of a cup of tea here and there.

Other physical traits Helen has gained from the remnants of Source Blood that still lingers in her system include:

  • Increased strength - She is able to easily hold her own against regular humans, even when outnumbered more than 2 to 1; often overpowering them and rendering them unconscious in a few seconds. She can also stand against those with abnormalities, though she does sometimes struggle in a 1v1, usually getting knocked around a bit before eventually figuring out how to 'win' against her opponent. (Note: Her knowledge of anatomy and physiology as well as her level of fight training are a major component in her encounters as most of the regular humans she faces are either caught unaware and or are also lacking in proper self-defense techniques.)
  • Enhanced health and well-being -
    • Increased healing factor - While nowhere near as instant as a vampire, she is seen to recover from injuries / physical trauma at a faster rate compared to regular humans, notably with very minimal to no visible scarring left behind on her skin afterward once a flesh wound has healed.
    • Adaptive metabolic system - Not only does it slow to allow her to eat less at times, but it also speeds up to allow her the ability to stave off the effects of being exposed to certain compounds / ailments to a greater degree and for a lot longer than a normal human; giving her a higher tolerance level before eventually succumbing albeit to lesser overall effects.
    • Heightened immunity - Seems to have an incredible resistance to viral (and assumedly also bacterial) pathogens.

"We crossed the line by having sex, our friendship is too important to me to throw away. We can never have sex again, Typhuss."
— Helen Magnus to Typhuss James Halliwell, 2370

It is revealed that Helen Magnus is very wealthy and goes to a villa she owns on Capri, near Naples, every 7 years for a long weekend. Helen likes to go on vacation on Risa, the Pleasure Planet of the galaxy. In 2370 Helen and Typhuss went on vacation with each other to Risa. That night Helen had sex with Typhuss in her room for five hours. The next night Helen had sex with Typhuss again in her room for five hours. Three days later they returned to the Sanctuary. Helen talked to Typhuss about their friendship and they stayed friends but they would not have sex again. The romance was short but Helen enjoyed having sex with Typhuss and remarked that it was the "best sex" she had ever had in her life, while talking to Kate Freelander in her office at the Sanctuary. (Sanctuary)

Hobbies[]

Helen has a known affinity for aviation, so much so that she owns a private fleet of several helicopters and planes. She is seen in a photograph to have, at the very least, met historical flight figure Amelia Earhart. In Helen's entire flight career she has only ever been in three crashes; one of which she was a passenger. All three accidents however were not the direct result of pilot error, but that of Abnormal interference beyond her control.

(According to Amanda Tapping, Helen Magnus plays the piano, though she is unsure of when Helen may find enough down time to play the instrument as a way to relax.)

Education[]

Aside from primarily being an M.D., she also holds a doctorate degree (D) in teratology (T), crypto-zoology (C), xenobiology (X), and biology (B) according to the letters printed on her Sanctuary business card.

Graduate school and medical board certification / licensing wasn't easy to come by for Helen Magnus as she had to constantly fight against the social era she lived in and the stigma of her father working on "outlandish case studies".

The influence of Gregory Magnus's connections and reputation initially helped allow her to gain massive amounts of medical and scientific knowledge (something that was odd for a woman of that time period). That however wasn't enough for her to gain entrance into the Royal College in London. Though Helen had passed the entrance exam three separate times with the highest marks possible, the Board repeatedly denied her entrance; Helen only tolerated taking the exam 3 times as getting into the London school was something she absolutely needed to do in order to gain a degree to legally practice medicine anywhere in Europe. Severely frustrated, she went and sought council with her father about her situation, adamantly refusing to take the exam for a fourth time. Gregory noted that she knew more about the subject matter than the professors writing the tests, and saw this constant denial for his daughter to have a career as a medical professional as a way for the Board to punish him for his fringe work rather than it being a grievance against her specifically. At her insistent plea to get some standing in the medical and scientific community, Gregory officially brought Helen into his world of studying abnormals.

At the University of Oxford in the late-1800's, she was one of the first woman to ever attend the institution, however, it was initially under the pretense that she could only audit classes as no women were allowed to enroll at the time; a rule she railed against with a vengeance. It wasn't until the year 1921 (as seen in the opening title sequence) that she was able to officially graduate with her M.D. certificate.

During Helen Magnus's time reliving the past, to build credit to the name 'Helen Bancroft', she went through graduate school again. By the year 1916, she had:

  • Graduated from the University of London with a Doctor in Science degree in Medical Science; becoming a visiting professor there.
  • Gained a PhD in Global Health from the University of Lahore in Pakistan; becoming the professor of Global Health at Lahore, its Executive Director of Health Science, and their Director of Medical Fellowship.
  • Became an honorary professor at the University of Queensland in Australia.

During the summer semester of 1948, she taught a Fellowship course at Black Mountain College in North Carolina to share an office with Buckminster Fuller.

Relationships[]

John Druitt
3x09 Sanctuary IMDb 17

Helen Magnus and John Druitt in a rare moment of peace

Helen Magnus was briefly engaged to John Druitt, her lover and first patient. It is implied on more than one occasion that she was once very much in love with him and those feelings continue to haunt her emotionally. However his activities as "Jack the Ripper" and his betrayal of her trust has remained a source of terrible pain.

Ashley Magnus
Ashley Magnus is a companion to help combat the overbearing weight of eternal loneliness that she was experiencing due to having lived for so long; after having continually witnessed people that she loved and cared about die. Helen loved her daughter with all her heart, and was very protective of her. Even though Helen needed Ashley to fulfill a vital and dangerous role within the Sanctuary Network for Helen's work, Helen candidly admitted to Ashley that she can't bear to see her hurt. This had previously led Magnus to keep certain details from Ashley. Rivaled only by John Druitt's betrayal, even making her try to find a way to end the eternity of her life.
Will Zimmerman
Will and Helen

Will and Helen

After saving his life when he was an 8-year-old boy, Helen Magnus had kept a long-distance watch over Will Zimmerman into adulthood. She anonymously funded his scholarship to Harvard University, and has now become his mentor. Even though he irritates her at times, she regards him as her protégé and friend who she has been grooming as one of her replacements as head of the Sanctuary Network should her eternal life come to an unexpected end.

Henry Foss
Helen Magnus took charge of Henry Foss when she found him as an orphan boy on the moors and took him to the Sanctuary. Though initially raising him like a son alongside her daughter Ashley, their adult relationship goes beyond being just that of mother and son. They have a profound respect for each other bundled in a complex blend of closeness and professionalism. During their time in Praxis, Magnus is seen to behave as a knowing parent towards Henry when she had tasked Kate Freelander to make sure he didn't get distracted by technological things. While infiltrating a SCIU facility (Area 51), Magnus became very visibly upset when she thought she had lost him to a creature through a dimensional rift (reacting to having potentially just lost a second child); once Nikola Tesla had finally returned him to her, she was seen not wanting to physically let go of Henry. Magnus is seen to off-and-on tease Henry, preying on his gullibility to easily believe her word about historical events and places, such as the real location of Area 51, about the true nature of The Pentagon, and Henry's continued outspoken hope for the existence of extra-terrestrial aliens. When Henry starts to recount a wild dream he had involving his girlfriend Erika Myers dressed as Princess Leia and him using his lightsaber (his wording easily inferable to be a possible sexual fantasy), Magnus lets out a shocked gasp and stops him before he could say more. This familial closeness between her and Henry means that Magnus the would presumably fill the role of being a grandmother figure to Henry's unborn daughter Alice.
Bigfoot
Bigfoot has been with Helen Magnus for the last third of her long life, and has become one of her most trusted companions and a dear friend.
Nikola Tesla
Helen Magnus smiling at Nikola Tesla

Helen Magnus smiling at Nikola Tesla after almost being blown up by the holographic map's particle accelerator

Helen Magnus's relationship to Nikola Tesla is very complex and at times has been difficult; although she acknowledges his genius and clearly enjoys their verbal sparring, his continuous amorous and sexual advances have gotten on her nerves for decades. But Magnus really enjoys that relationship more then she is willing to admit. Like most others who knew him, she considered him "an obnoxious ass" back in their University of Oxford days, but she didn't, however, give up on him, helping him realize that his aspirations of ancient vampire grandeur were doomed to fail. After the disappearance(s) of John Druitt their relationship develops; she comforts him when he is 'de-vamped', however, despite their differences, they both love each other deeply even though they both loath to admit.

James Watson
Another member of The Five, Helen Magnus and James Watson were very close partners. Watson helped Magnus conduct research and run the original sanctuary in London, eventually being given the reigns to the UK Sanctuary when Magnus left England for Old City to start a new sanctuary there. Magnus and Watson cared deeply for one another; being one another's trusted confidants. In the early 1940s John Druitt suspected out of jealousy that Magnus and Watson had become a romantic couple, becoming filled with rage at the thought of his best friend sleeping with his ex-lover that he still has feelings for. Potentially due to Watson's limited mobility later in life, Magnus had been known to visit him in London every so often. While a past brief sexual relationship between the two hasn't been confirmed to the audience, fans do otherwise consider Watson to be an Uncle / Godfather figure to Magnus's daughter, Ashley Magnus.
Typhuss James Halliwell
Helen first met Typhuss in 2354 after he married Samantha Carter. But Helen first met Typhuss four years piror to 2354, when he was seventeen. On one of her expeditions in 2350, she saved a young Typhuss James Halliwell from dangerous thugs who were attacking him. (Star Trek: Intrepid special episode: "Tempus")

After saving his life when he was seventeen Helen has always watched over Typhuss, and has now become his mentor and friend. Even though he irritates her at times, she regards him as her protégé and friend who she has been grooming as her replacement as head of the Sanctuary Network should her eternal life come to an unexpected end. They greatly respect each other, and Typhuss relies on her as a mentor as much as she relies on him as her second-in-command. (Sanctuary)

In an alternate timeline Helen and Typhuss, had a daughter, Ashley Magnus born in 2371. This timeline cease to exist when Typhuss and his crew won the war against the Xindi. (Star Trek: Intrepid)

After the death of Prue Halliwell their relationship develops more; Helen even kisses Typhuss in the main lab during the Abnormal Insurgency invasion of the Old City Sanctuary.

In 2387, Helen went to Prue's funeral with Typhuss and Sam Carter, helping him deal with his sister's death. For 37 years Helen has been in love with Typhuss and tells him after his sister's funeral. Typhuss filed for divorce from Kira. Helen talked to Typhuss about leaving Kira, Helen told Typhuss that he was not thinking clearly. Typhuss admitted to Helen that he had waited three decades to tell her he was in love with her and have a relationship with her. Typhuss also told Helen that he was not going to wait any longer and Helen agreed. Helen kissed Typhuss hard on the lips. Helen and Typhuss were no longer friends. Also, during this time, Typhuss admitted his feelings to Helen and the two began a relationship. (Sanctuary)

In January 2388, Kira did not sign the divorce papers, so the divorce was never finalised. Typhuss broke up with Helen and reconciled with Kira. Later they became friends again. (Sanctuary episode: The Helen Magnus Impostor)

Helen Magnus (redhair)

Helen Magnus with red hair

Later that year Helen dyed her hair red and Helen thought "It was sexy and hot". (Sanctuary episode: "Susan Magnus Returns")

It is implied on more than one occasion that Typhuss is the only man Helen has ever truly loved, but she still has obvious feelings for him even though they are friends. Typhuss is so loyal to Helen that he would die for her. Typhuss is one of the most important persons in Helen Magnus's life and a trusted agent of the Sanctuary Network and one of her closest friends, Typhuss is acutely respectful of Helen’s work and knowledge. (Sanctuary; Star Trek: Intrepid)

In 2394, after Helen and Typhuss got drunk they had sex in Helen's bedroom in the Underground Sanctuary, to make matters worse Helen finds out the she is pregnant with his child. The two consider having a romantic relationship again. Later, Helen and Typhuss start a romantic relationship they eventually get married.

Romances[]

Of Helen's countless amounts of friends and lovers over the years, there are only a handful of known people with which Helen has had romances with, as well as interests in:

John Druitt[]

Helen's former fiancé, whom she loved with her entire being while at Oxford.

Dr. James Watson[]

Close partner, trusted confidant, and potential lover.

Nikola Tesla[]

Longtime best friend whom Helen has had several dates with. The two of them had a supposedly good time together while in Vienna during the Springtime of an unknown year. (Amanda Tapping believes they may have been together at one point.)

Amelia Earhart[]

Amanda Tapping says they were in some sort of relationship.

Charlotte Benoit[]

Brief one-time lover for a few days. Shortly after Typhuss's break up with Helen in 2388, Helen and Charlotte Benoit became lovers. The romantic relationship was new to Helen and Charlotte, Typhuss had to get use to Charlotte and Helen being lovers. They ended the relationship soon after that.

Olaf Van Ausberg[]

Suggested past lover who invites Helen over for a relaxing weekend getaway, though she declined his offer due to emotional distress surrounding Ashley's upcoming birthday.

Eric[]

It is unknown if Helen and Eric had any sort of relationship outside of a professional one, but she did exhibit a mix of sorrow and admiration for the man shortly after his death; enough to lead viewers to believe they were close on some level. Will had candidly asked her if he was reading into a personal relationship between her and Eric based on her quiet emotional reaction over his death. She brushed the inquiry off, covering with: "I don't want to see a sacrifice go to waste". However, her mournful looks, tone of voice, and her trying to reaffirm to Will with a following nod that it was only just 'that' suggests that she cared more about the man than just her simply being sad over losing him due to her having liked his positive personal view on Abnormals.

An unnamed Romanian Lupus Wrangler[]

When Will first arrived at the Old City Sanctuary, Typhuss recounted a time when he and Helen along with a bunch of nervous locals (one of which "who seriously looked like Adrien Brody" caught her eye) had bagged and tagged a werewolf den during the summer of 2367. When Typhuss had gushed over the memory of the attractive man, Magnus had tried to temper Typhuss's unfiltered blathering to which Typhuss responded by looking up at her, letting out: "You thought he was hot, Helen.".

Typhuss James Halliwell[]

Helen Magnus physiology chart[]

Category
Details
Sleep Helen Magnus frequently stays up very late at night, saying that she rarely sleeps unless her patients do too. She also doesn't sleep when she becomes aware of a particularly worrisome detail of a situation the Sanctuary has currently found itself in.
Warmth Helen Magnus is seen to be able to tolerate being exposed to cold temperatures better (both air and water). (Note: 'Resistance' to cold temperatures may actually be an inherited trait instead of being source blood derived, as both Gregory Magnus and Ashley Magnus are known to have survived cryopreservation without any issues; whether accidentally caused by being out in freezing environmental conditions as an elderly adult or intentionally induced in a controlled laboratory setting as a six to seven week-old embryo.
Food Occasionally, when stressed or very busy working on a demanding issue, Helen Magnus is seen to intentionally forgo / accidentally forget to eat regular meals; eating very little to nothing at all for an extended period of time lasting for several days up to a week. She survives mostly off of a cup of tea here and there.

Other physical traits Helen Magnus has gained from the remnants of source blood that still lingers in her system include:

Trait
Details
Increased strength Helen Magnus is able to easily hold her own against regular humans, even when outnumbered more than two to one; often overpowering them and rendering them unconscious in a few seconds.
Enhanced healing factor While nowhere near as instant as a vampire, Helen Magnus is seen to recover from injuries / physical trauma at a faster rate compared to regular humans, notably with very minimal to no visible scarring left behind on her skin afterward once a flesh wound has healed. Noteworthy afflictions she has rebounded from include 3 separate traumas to the brain and organ failure caused by severe radiation poisoning.
Adaptive metabolic system Not only does it slow to allow Helen Magnus to eat less at times, but it also speeds up to allow her the ability to stave off the effects of being exposed to certain compounds / ailments to a greater degree and for a lot longer than a normal human; giving her a higher tolerance level before eventually succumbing albeit to lesser overall effects.
Heightened immunity Helen Magnus seems to have an incredible resistance to viral (and assumedly also bacterial) pathogens. This is a trait that is known to be shared amongst other members of The Five, specifically James Watson and John Druitt.

Olaf Von Ausburg Suggested past lover who invites Helen Magnus over for a relaxing weekend getaway, though she declined his offer due to emotional distress.
Eric It is unknown if Helen Magnus and Eric had any sort of relationship outside of a professional one, but she did exhibit a mix of sorrow and admiration for the man shortly after his death; enough to lead viewers to believe they were close on some level.
An unnamed Romanian Lupus Wrangler When Will first arrived at the Old City Sanctuary, Typhuss recounted a time when he and Helen along with a bunch of nervous locals (one of which "who seriously looked like Adrien Brody" caught her eye) had bagged and tagged a werewolf den during the summer of 2367. When Typhuss had gushed over the memory of the attractive man, Magnus had tried to temper Typhuss's unfiltered blathering to which Typhuss responded by looking up at her, letting out: "You thought he was hot, Helen.".
