In an alternate timeline where Khan Noonien Singh won the Eugenics Wars, the Illustrious was a 24th century Khanate of Earth starship, a Dreadnought-class battleship in Earthfleet service in the 2370s decade. Both the ship and its commanding officer Jean-Luc Picard were known as The Khan's Dagger. The Illustrious was the Khanate's flagship. In the primary universe, the USS Illustrious was a Federation Defiant-class destroyer operated by Starfleet by 2376. (ST video game: Armada)
Khan Imperator Tiberius Sejanus Singh gave Picard Sector 221-G to rein the local coalition of warrior cultures of Thallon, Xenex and Danter, which had previously destroyed several Earth ships, in. Through the application of sheer brutality, Picard made the rebels surrender unconditionally in a matter of months.
When the Third Khan received word that the Defiance, commanded by Princeps Julian Bashir, had found the long-lost SS Botany Bay in the year 2376, he ordered the Illustrious to make maximum warp speed to rendezvous with the Defiance to take over the DY-102. Khan Singh also informed Bashir that the Illustrious would catch up with the Defiance before Bashir's ship returned to Earth Station D9.
Two hours before the Illustrious arrived at the Ajir system, Princeps Senior Picard sent a message to Bashir to stand down his command. The message was played out loud by the vox officer on the bridge. Bashir, who had his allegiance to the Khans and their version of history cast into doubt by the Basics, allowed the Botany Bay to escape before Picard's arrival.
