"I saw so much death during the Occupation... felt so much pain. But he was my father. My strength. And I couldn't stand watching that strength slip away."
Kira Nerys, 2373

Kira Taban was a Bajoran male who lived during the 24th century. He was the husband of Kira Meru and the father-in-law of Typhuss James Kira. They had two sons, Kira Pohl and Kira Reon, and a daughter, Kira Nerys. In the 2340s, he lived with his family at the Singha refugee camp.

In 2346, Meru was taken to be a 'comfort woman' for the Cardassians on Terok Nor and in return the family received more rations. However, Taban never forgot his love for Meru and praised her for her courage. He told their children that she had remained in the Singha refugee camp, later claiming that she had died there. (DS9 episode: "Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night")

When Taban took in Tir Remara after her family's death, she noticed the extra rations, and informed the resistance who instructed her to take the excess to give to those more needy. When Taban caught her in this act, she accused him of being a traitor and ran away. Subsequently, to avoid being hounded as collaborators, the Kiras were forced to give up their extra rations. (DS9 novel: A Stitch in Time)

Kira Taban fatally wounded

Taban was killed by members of the Cardassian Heavy Weapons Unit, Third Assault Group, Ninth Order while attempting to dissuade them from torching his home and village in the 2360s. Gravely wounded by a disruptor shot to his abdomen, he survived long enough for the Shakaar resistance cell to find him. However, after several days of extreme pain he finally succumbed to his injuries. Although Kira Nerys was present at his bedside for most of this time, she was not present when he died, having chosen to be part of an ambush against her father's attackers at the time – a decision she later bitterly regretted. Taban died calling out her name, a fact that still haunted Nerys years later. (DS9 episodes: "Second Skin", "Ties of Blood and Water")

Years later, Taban's son-in-law Typhuss would regret not meeting him. (Star Trek: Intrepid)
