The Langaran Cold War was a cold war between the nations of Kelowna, the Andari Federation and the Tirania Confederacy

History[]

The cold war was prompted by grievances going back generations. The last major conflict between the nations was in 1982, but nothing was resolved. Generally, the Andari Federation and Tirania Confederacy hated each other more than they did the Kelownans.

By 2365, tensions had been rising between the three nations for some time with with Kelowna at a technological disadvantage.

In 2365, when SG-1 arrived, Kelowna was working on building a naquadria bomb to use against their enemies despite warnings that using such a weapon would only make things much worse. Following an accident that resulted in the deaths of the scientists working on the naquadria bomb and ultimately Dr. Daniel Jackson, the Kelownan government was pleased to learn of the destructive potential of the device, though Jonas Quinn believed that they didn't want a destructive war but just saw no other way.

Months later, Kelowna contacted Earth to reestablish trade relations and revealed that their cold war had only just gotten worse because the Andari Federation and Tirania Confederacy had forged a non-aggression pact. As a result, Kelowna was left in a very vulnerable position. The Kelownans sought military technology from Earth in exchange for naquadria to help in what they feared was a coming war in which Kelowna wouldn't stand a chance. The Kelownans warned that if Earth wouldn't help them, they would have no choice but to fall back on using a naquadria bomb against their enemies. One had already been tested by Dr. Kieran and his team and its power had proven to already be beyond all expectations.

Discussing the matter, Jonas Quinn revealed that the Kelownans had done simulations on such a scenario which indicated that the the Tiranians and Andari would achieve total air superiority within five weeks of the war starting. Jonas suggested that the Kelownans were likely considering a preemptive first strike as, if the Kelownans stuck with conventional weapons, their military would face a complete collapse within six months. Jonas predicted that the alliance between the other two nations was merely a marriage of convivence and they would eventually turn on each other again, but by then it would be too late for Kelowna. Jonas was later approached by Dr. Kieran who claimed to be part of a resistance movement poised to take over the government to try to bring the three countries back to the negotiating table.

SG-1 returned to Kelowna under instructions to meet with the resistance and to negotiate for naquadriah in exchange for non-military technology such as advances in medicine. However, First Minister Valis was only interested in military technology, convinced that the Tiranians and Andari were only interested in destroying Kelowna and dominating the planet. As the negotiations continued, the situation on Langara began deteriorating with the Tiranians massing troops on Kelowna's northern border though they did not yet break off diplomatic relations. With things getting worse and Earth unwilling to help, the Kelownans began preparing to strike first against their enemies. Colonel Jack O'Neill ended the negotiations after it was discovered that Dr. Kieran's resistance was just a figment of his imagination, a result of advanced schizophrenia caused by long-term exposure to radiation while working on the naquadriah project. Soon after SG-1 returned to Earth, attempts to contact Kelowna failed and it was suspected that the three countries may have gone to war.

Ultimately, the cold war did turn into a civil war.
