The interface of the RG/BBT phaser cannon

These were a type of phaser cannons developed through the Stargate Program. They were capable of delivering an impact velocity of mach five at two hundred and fifty miles. It was possible to relocate the weapon and either place them on a starship or fix them on the ground of planets in order to provide a level of protection to certain locations.

The operators of the device sat at the back and used the controls to target enemy fighters approaching their location. The open nature of their seat meant that they were somewhat vulnerable to attack.

History

The production of the RG/BBT SG mounted phaser cannon was created to serve as a new weapon for the Federation starship Prometheus. It was scheduled to be fitted on the vessel to replace its current close-in weaponry for the next refit. When Stargate Command received a distress call through the Stargate from the Atlantis Expedition, they assembled a military expedition to reinforce Starbase Atlantis. Many of these weapons were requisitioned and sent through the Stargate and placed at strategic locations throughout the starbase to defend it against a Wraith assault. The weapons proved to be effective in taking out the enemy Wraith Darts, though the Wraith proved their cunning by using their culling transporters to snatch at least one phaser cannon crew from their seats. (SGA: "The Siege, Part 2", "The Siege, Part 3")

The RG/BBT SGs were also used during the Battle of Icarus Base to defend P4X-351 from an attacking Lucian Alliance force consisting of Ha'taks, Troopships and Death Gliders. They proved most effective against the Gliders. (SGU: "Air, Part 1")
