The Second Battle of Sector 001 was a battle fought in 2378 between the United Federation of Planets and the Borg Collective.

Prelude[]

Second Battle of Sector 001 fleet

The Federation fleet amassed by Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway

In 2377, the Federation starship USS Voyager returned to Earth from the Delta Quadrant via a Borg transwarp hub. A Borg sphere was sent to intercept them, but was destroyed by a transphasic torpedo acquired from Admiral Kathryn Janeway of an alternate timeline.

After recovering from the destruction of the hub, the new Borg Queen sent a Borg cube to Earth to find out what had happened to the sphere. Recently promoted Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway was notified, and organized a fleet to counter the threat.

The Battle[]

WaitingFleet

A Federation fleet converges on an open transwarp conduit exit, ready to face any Borg vessel that emerges

The Federation fleet, which greatly outnumbered the number of starships gathered previously at Wolf 359 and at the Typhon sector, gathered near the transwarp conduit. The cube exited the conduit, and broadcasted it's familiar itany:

"We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."

The fleet opened fire, but to minimal effect. The defense perimeter was quickly shattered, with numerous ships being lost, as the cube continued on unrelentingly towards Earth.

USS Regula destroyed

The USS Regula destroyed

The Excelsior-class USS Regula was among the first ships destroyed, with its saucer section partially vaporized while approaching.

The USS Enterprise-E, temporarily under the command of Commander William T. Riker, was eventually neutralized after sustaining heavy damage. When the USS Buckner and the USS Yosemite rushed to rescue their trapped sister ships, they, too, were destroyed, along with numerous other starships entering the combat zone.

The surviving ships, however, including the USS Endeavour and the USS Intrepid, assaulted the cube all the way to the Sol system.

Admiral Janeway attempted to rally the fleet for a final attack on the cube, but, her flagship the USS Voyager was neutralized shortly thereafter. However, by this point in the battle, the fleet had succeeded in dealing heavy damage to the cube's outer hull, causing fluctuations in their power grid. Captain John Taggart from the Endeavour, assumed command of the fleet and ordered all weapons to be targeted on a seemingly non-critical point on the cube.

The resulting barrage destroyed the cube, though the explosion also claimed several nearby starships.

Aftermath[]

Starfleet's losses in the battle were comparable to the earlier action at the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2367.
