EXT. WARP SPACE [OPTICAL]

[DRAMATIC MUSIC]

As the Enterprise travels to a nearby nebula.

INT. MESS HALL, USS ENTERPRISE

Crewmen Cutler is eating Ploomek soup while reading about different types of bugs.

ETHAN: How can you eat that stuff?

ELIZABETH: Its healthier then what you're eating.

ETHAN: At least this has taste.

ELIZABETH: I guess it just takes a more discriminating palate to appreciate Vulcan cuisine. Do you know that there's at least five thousand of subspecies of termites on Loracus Prime?

[A glow shines through the windows as Ethan looks out the window as Elizabeth also looks out the window as well to see an M-Class world.]

ETHAN: I thought we were heading towards that interstellar nebula?

ELIZABETH: Yeah we were. Did anyone hear about?

CREWMEN: Not a word.

They continue to look out the window.

ELIZABETH: I wonder if anyone lives down there.

ETHAN: There's a lot of plant life. It might be an oxygen atmosphere.

ELIZABETH: What do you think. First contact?

CREWMEN: I don't see any cities or agriculture.

ETHAN: Maybe they live underground or in the water?

ELIZABETH: Is that snow on those mountains?

ETHAN: You'd think the Captain would make an annoucement or something.

ELIZABETH: Well why don't you call him.

Ethan smiles as he continues to look out the window.

INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE

ANGLE - TRANSPARENT VIEWER [OPTICAL]

shows the M-Class world.

As the camera pans back as Captain Branson's standing in front of the helm and navigational consoles.

CPT. BRANSON: Full sensor scans.

Commander T'Lar taps commands into the science console and turns to reports.

LCDR. T'LAR: 17% oxygen, 81% nitrogen. The planet shows a diverse ecology, but there's no sign of human life.

LCDR. WILLIAMS: Sounds like home.

LCDR. IVANOVA [smiles]: Our first discovery in the Shackleton Expanse.

CPT. BRANSON [smiles]: Yeah, but let's make sure that we're the only ones here scan for any marker buoys, man made relays telling anyone to stay away.

Commander T'Lar taps commands into the science console.

LCDR. T'LAR: Sensors show no sign of any of those devices sir.

LTJG. SMITH: Nice.

CPT. BRANSON: Commander Ivanova, organize a survey team.

LCDR. IVANOVA: Aye, sir.

Commander Ivanova EXITS the bridge as Captain Branson turns to Commander T"Lar.

CPT. BRANSON: T'Lar, pick out the members of the survey team I assume that it won't violate protocol?

T'Lar raised an eyebrow.

INT. TRANSPORTER ROOM, USS ENTERPRISE

The survey team is getting the gear prep to beam down.

CREWMEN: Thanks.

Crewmen Cutler looks up at Commander T'Lar.

CREWMEN CUTLER: I tried the ploomek soup it was good. Vulcan cuisine is very good.

Commander T'Lar just looks at her.

LCDR. T'LAR: Did you sterilize the sample containers?

CREWMEN CUTLER: Yes, ma'am. Thank you for choosing me for this mission Commander.

LCDR. T'LAR: I chose you for this mission because of your specialty is entomology. This planet has a diverse insect population.

She turns away.

CREWMEN CUTLER [sotto]: Great.

ETHAN: You'd had better luck making friends with a house fly.

CREWMEN CUTLER: I know.

[TRANSPORTER ROOM DOORS WHOOSHED OPENED] As Captain Branson and Doctor Carlson enters.

CPT. BRANSON: Are we all set?

LCDR. T'LAR: Yes, Captain.

CHIEF MACKENZIE: I have the transporter coordinates sir.

CPT. BRANSON: Very well then.

They step onto the transporter pad.

CPT. BRANSON: Energize.

Chief Mackenzie taps commands into the transporter console and activates the transporter.

CUT TO:
EXT. TRANSPORTER SITE, PLANET SURFACE - DAY [OPTICAL]

The survey team materialized along with the gear as they look around.

CPT. BRANSON: Wow. I almost forgot what fresh air smells like.

LCDR. T'LAR [re: tricorder]: The atmosphere contains trace elements of nitrogen dioxide, chloromethane.

CPT. BRANSON: Put that thing away Commander. Take a moment to enjoy yourself. The sky ever this blue on Vulcan?

LCDR. T'LAR: Occasionally.

CPT. BRANSON: We're on an alien world light years away from Earth or Vulcan. Don't that impress you?

LCDR. T'LAR: I've been to 36 Minshara-class worlds this experience is only slightly different.

She then turns to the survey team.

LCDR. T'LAR: You each have your assignments we'll meet back here at 1900 hours. If you encounter anything you feel that you cannot handle com either myself or the Captain do not take any chances.

The survey team splits up to conduct their scans, unknown to them their being watched from afar by what appears to be Klingon soldiers.

Captain Branson and Doctor Carlson are walking by a stream.

DR. CARLSON: This is nice me and T'Lar could set up a cabin right over there.

John looks over at him.

CPT. BRANSON: Two days aboard ship and you're ready to jump ship?

DR. CARLSON [smiles]: Nah, you guys would be lost without your chief medical officer.

CPT. BRANSON: Come on let's get back to the transport site before your wife com us.

They head back to the transport site.

EXT. TRANSPORT SITE, PLANET SURFACE [OPTICAL]

Both Captain Branson and Doctor Carlson return as Commander T'Lar walks over to them.

LCDR. T'LAR: We have identified several nocturnal marsupials. I would like to have Crewmen's Cutler and Novakovich to remain with me overnight to study them.

CPT. BRANSON: Good to see that you're getting into the spirit of things T'Lar.

LCDR. T'LAR: It would be illogical to not study nocturnal species further but if you insist on using your human emotions to label my request then that is agreeable sir.

CPT. BRANSON: All right, we'll beam you guys up first thing in the morning but keep in mind we're not in Federation space currently.

LCDR. T'LAR [nods]: Aye, sir.

DR. CARLSON: I love you T'Lar.

He kisses her forehead and joins the Captain.

CPT. BRANSON [to com]: Branson to Enterprise four to beam up.

Captain Branson, Doctor Carlson, and two members of the survey team dematerialized as Commander T'Lar turns to Novakovich and Cutler.

LCDR. T'LAR: Start setting up camp.

CREWMEN NOVAKOVICH: Yes, ma'am.

CREWMEN CUTLER: Yes, ma'am.

They're setting up camp.

shows the unknown blip at extreme range.

ENS. HANSEN: It keeps going in and out.

CPT. BRANSON: Can you ID it?

ENS. HANSEN: Negative sir its just on the outskirts of our sensors.

CPT. BRANSON: Have you tried the deep space scanners?

ENS. HANSEN: Yes, sir so far it remains outside the range of the scanners.

LCDR. IVANOVA: So, it could be a ship or just a probe?

ENS. HANSEN: Possibly but won't know for sure till it gets closer.

Captain Branson looks at Hansen.

CPT. BRANSON: Keep an eye on it if it changes course let me know.

ENS. HANSEN: Aye, sir.

ANGLE - SCIENCE MONITOR [OPTICAL]

shows the unknown blip blinking.

EXT. CAMP SITE, PLANET SURFACE - NIGHT [OPTICAL]

The survey team are taking a break as Commander T'Lar is reviewing her tricorder readings.

ETHAN: I never been this busy before in my life.

ELIZABETH: Same here.

[TRANSPORTER HUMS] As both Commander Williams and Lieutenant Mason materialized in the camp with some extra gear that Commander T'Lar requested.

LTJG. MASON: Here's the extra gear you requested Commander.

He hands her the PADD.

LCDR. T'LAR [re: PADD]: This will be doable Mister Mason.

LTJG. MASON: The Captain has also authorized me to remain here on the surface to protect you and the survey team.

LCDR. T'LAR: The Captain is always right I assume that we have room for you and Commander Williams.

They get a tent from the survey gear and go to set it up.

[WIND STARTS BLOWING] As Lieutenant Mason looks over at Commander Williams.

LTJG. MASON: Looks like we're about to have a bit of bad weather!

LCDR. T'LAR [re: tricorder]: A storm front has been detecting heading up from the northeast!

A tent stake is pulled out of the ground and stabs a tree.

LTJG. MASON: T'Lar, you told the Captain that you found mountains today?

LCDR. T'LAR: About half a kilometer.

LTJG. MASON: I think we're gonna need it.

CPT. BRANSON [re: PADD]: The survey team?

LCDR. IVANOVA: They've taken refugee in a cave I've got a shuttle on standby I suggest that we pull them out.

CREWMEN CUTLER: Commander, there's a lot of nocturnal species in this cave I could spend years in here collecting them.

LTJG. MASON: I wouldn't want to spend years doing something this boring.

Commander Williams fixes a piece of equipment that malfunctioned a few hours ago.

LCDR. WILLIAMS: Ah, there you go Mister Novaokvich.

CREWMEN NOVAOKVICH: Thanks Commander.

Then they hear a rock fall as Lieutenant Mason aimed his phaser rifle where the sound was coming from.

CREWMEN NOVAOKVICH: What was that?

LTJG. MASON: I'm not sure stay here I'll go take a look.

Lieutenant Mason goes to the source of the sound and he discovers a group of Klingon warriors speaking to each other in their language, as he slowly backs away so they don't see or hear him.

Captain Branson looks over at Commander Ivanova then back to the viewer.

CPT. BRANSON [confused]: I-I'm afraid that I don't follow? I thought this was neutral space that neither side can claim anything.

CPT. K'DOK [viewer]: If you do not remove your survey team we will respond in force!

Captain Branson reacts to that threat.

INT. MAIN CAVERN

The survey team is gathering their gear so they can get out of there and back to the Enterprise, they hear another noise then Crewmen Novaokvich turns to the sound.

CREWMEN NOVAOKVICH: Did you hear that?

CREWMEN CUTLER: ETHAN!

Lieutenant Mason fires his phaser rifle at the approaching Klingon soldiers as Commander Williams grabs and drags a wounded Crewmen Novaokvich to cover, as she gets a med kit to treat his wound as Lieutenant Mason gets pushed back by the approaching Klingon warriors but the survey team are taken prisoner.

The survey team are grouped together while Commander Williams is treating a wounded Novaokvich.

LCDR. WILLIAMS: We've got to do something he's getting worse.

The Enterprise is facing the Che'leth.

INT. CAPTAIN'S READY ROOM/SITUATION ROOM, USS ENTERPRISE [YELLOW ALERT]

The senior staff is gathered around the table.

DR. CARLSON: If it means getting back my wife and her survey team let's give him the damn information!

LCDR. IVANOVA: That would violate every Starfleet protocol known to man if we did that we'd be screwing over a lot of lives on those Starbases and ships if we do what K'Dok is demanding.

DR. CARLSON [frustrated]: My wife is in danger of being executed by those Klingon bastards and we're here debating what to do about what K'Dok has requested.

ENS. CARLSON: Steven, if we do what he is demanding we'll have Klingons attacking every one of our vessels and bases we can't take that risk.

DR. CARLSON: Even if it means the death of your sister in law Kara?

Captain Branson paces about.

CPT. BRANSON: Everyone of you are right about the situation where are we with the transporters?

LCDR. IVANOVA: Chief Mackenzie is working on modifying the transporters to beam the survey party from the cavern but so far it'll be a few hours before they'll be able to beam them aboard.

CPT. BRANSON: Keep at it dismissed.

The senior staff EXITS as Captain Branson remains thinking as Commander Ivanova turns to him.

LCDR. IVANOVA: Are you all right John?

CPT. BRANSON: I've got a choice to make that could doom the Federation or that could doom those lives on the surface Z, I'll be fine.

Commander Ivanova EXITS the ready room as John thinks.

INT. MAIN CAVERN

Crewmen Novaokvich is sweaty and coughs as Commander Williams changes the dressing on the bandage.

LCDR. WILLIAMS: Damn it this is the 3rd bandage that's been soaked the blot must of struck an artery in his shoulder.

The Klingon warrior walks over to them.

KLINGON WARRIOR: The down Earther won't make it we don't like it when our prisoners aren't able to fight for their lives.

LTJG. MASON: He's still breathing and as long as he's still breathing you're not doing anything to him.

The warrior faces Jack snarling but before he could do anything to him.

[TRANSPORTER HUM] As the survey team and their gear dematerialized.

Doctor Carlson turns to him.

DR. CARLSON: He'll make a full recovery but I'd like to have him get another check up at the nearest medical outpost.

CPT. BRANSON: Medical outpost Gaffney is just along this course.

DR. CARLSON: That's good.

Captain Branson looks at him.

CPT. BRANSON: How's the rest of the survey team?

DR. CARLSON: They're all right for what they went through.
