The Strategic Homeland Intelligence Extraction and Logistics Division, also simply referred to as S.H.I.E.L.D is United Earth's primary intelligence organization.

Regular S.H.I.E.L.D. field agents are usually equipped with a I.C.E.R pistol. As a military branch they have access to Earth military grade personal armaments. They have access to Phase pistols, plasma weapons, and stun grenades.

There are ten levels of security clearance, as well as Level Alpha, Omega, and Platinum Clearance. As agents moved up from Level 1, they gained access to more information, and frequently, more power, though rank and clearance level is not necessarily correlated.
- Level 1: Technical, maintenance, or secretarial agents.
- Level 2: Many Level 2 agents worked as foot soldiers wearing body armor.
- Level 3: Administration and documentation with some working as communication specialists
- Level 4: Some Clearance Level 4 agents worked as field agents while others worked as pilots.
- Level 5: Most level 5 agents are scientists, researchers and engineers.
- Level 6: Level 6 agents specialized in espionage and high-level combat.
- Level 7: Clearance level 7 agents specialize in deep cover espionage and high-level combat.
- Level 8: Some level 8 agents work as mission controllers or facility directors.
- Level 9: Level 9 is the access level held by the Deputy Director. As such, they have access to all S.H.I.E.L.D. files, including high ranking projects, secrets and missions.
- Level 10: Level 10 is the access level held by the Director. As Director, they have access not only to all S.H.I.E.L.D. files, but to United Earth's most important files and secrets.
- Other
- Alpha Level: This was an additional clearance level that was given to United Earth Starfleet Admirals and MACO Generals.
- Omega Level This was an additional Clearance Level that was needed to access special files, such as the full details of the Xindi prototype or regarding the Temporal Cold War and the Borg (through the limited experience of the Enterprise)
- Platinum level: This clearance level was held by the United Earth president.
