DR. CARLSON (smiles): Kara what can I do for you?

ENS. CARLSON: I am having a headache.

He gets his medical tricorder and scans her.

DR. CARLSON: Hmm I'm detecting a minor increase in your dopamine levels, let me get you something for that you're the fourth crewmen to come here complaining about having a headache since we've been in this system.

He gets a hypo and injects her with the meds.

DR. CARLSON (smiles): That should help relieve pressure.

ENS. CARLSON: Thanks Steven.

She leaves sickbay as Steven is worried.

INT-USS ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE

The crew are at their stations as Ensign Carlson takes her station as an Ensign hands Captain Branson a PADD.

CAPT. BRANSON (re: PADD): Thank you Ensign.

He hands her the PADD and she walks away.

LT. T'LAR: We've finished mapping this area.

CAPT. BRANSON: Alright then Ensign set course for the next grid.

ENS. CARLSON: Aye, sir.

Then T'Lar reports.

LT. T'LAR: Captain sensors are detecting something within a nebula cloud.

Captain Branson turns to her.

CAPT. BRANSON: What is it?

LT. T'LAR: Unknown.

Then Lieutenant Mitchell reports.

LTJG. MITCHELL: I'm getting it as well sir whatever this is its massive.

Captain Branson turns to Una.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: Something isn't right.

CAPT. BRANSON: Agreed red alert raise deflectors.

Lights dimmed and klaxons blare.

(Episode Notes: Opening Credits Fall Over Opening Scenes)

The Enterprise is over the massive vessel.

INT-USS ENTERPRISE CAPTAIN'S READY ROOM (RED ALERT)

Captain Branson is speaking with Vice Admiral Alice Ozawa.

VICE ADM. OZAWA (monitor): What's your take, Captain?

CAPT. BRANSON: I'm convinced now that the sounds coming from that alien ship are giving the crew headaches.

VICE ADM. OZAWA (Monitor): And you don't consider that a threat?

CAPT. BRANSON (Confused): What the large ship outside our front door or the migraines?

VICE ADM. OZAWA (Monitor): The Migraines

CAPT. BRANSON: Right now Doctor Carlson is helping the crew with their headaches but they look like they're subsiding.

VICE ADM. OZAWA (Monitor): Aren't you being a little pie in the sky, Captain? I mean this noise is coming from an alien ship that you know nothing about

CAPT. BRANSON: Isn't that why we're out here exploring?

VICE ADM. OZAWA (Monitor): I'm dispatching the U.S.S. Yorktown to your position they'll be delivering scientists

CAPT. BRANSON: Very well we'll be waiting ma'am Enterprise out.

Transmission ends.

EXT-SPACE

The Yorktown emerges from warp and approaches the Enterprise and large alien vessel.

INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE TRANSPORTER ROOM (RED ALERT)

Captain Branson and Commander Chin-Riley are awaiting the arrival of Lieutenant Commander Keller who beams aboard the Enterprise.

CAPT. BRANSON: Commander Keller welcome aboard the Enterprise I'm John Branson commanding officer of this vessel, and this is my first officer Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley.

They leave the transporter room.

CUT TO:
INT-USS ENTERPRISE DECK FIVE CORRIDOR (RED ALERT)

The trio are walking through the corridor.

LTCMDR. KELLER: I was very interested when Admiral Ozawa informed me about your discovery.

CAPT. BRANSON: It is a very interesting fine.

LTCMDR. KELLER: I'd like to take a look at your sensor data and records of the vessel and see if there's anything we can do to get inside it or take samples of the hull.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: I'll have Lieutenant T'Lar make the data available to you.

LTCMDR. KELLER: Why is your ship at red alert.

CAPT. BRANSON: Because we're in front of a hostile vessel that's not answering our hails.

Commander Keller turns to him.

LTCMDR. KELLER: I need you to discontinue red alert.

CAPT. BRANSON: Why?

LTCMDR. KELLER: We can't risk that this thing could act hostile.

Captain Branson walks over to the com panel and activates it.

CAPT. BRANSON (to com): Bridge go to yellow alert but keep your finger on red alert if that ship twitches in any hostile way take us back to red alert, and unload a payload of photon torpedoes into it and don't way for my order.

LTJG. MASON (com voice): Aye, sir

The lights brighten up as it changes to yellow.

LTCMDR. KELLER: Thank you.

He walks away.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: Why is he such a jerk?

CAPT. BRANSON: I don't know Una but whatever is going on I don't like it.

He follows him as Una follows.

EXT-SPACE

The Enterprise and Yorktown are over the vessel.

INT-USS ENTERPRISE SITUATION ROOM (YELLOW ALERT)

Monitor shows the schematics of the alien vessel as Lieutenant T'Lar is briefing the senior staff and Commander Keller about the alien vessel.

LT. T'LAR: So far nothing has come from the sensor reading we have been able to take of the vessel the outer hull is too dense.

CAPT. BRANSON: Can we tow it?

LTJG. MASON: Negative the tractor can't lock onto it.

LTCMDR. KELLER: Well we'll have to go inside it and get some scans ourselves.

Everyone looks at him.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: What?

LTJG. MASON: Sensors can't get a good read on how many people are onboard the alien vessel we could be walking into a hostile situation.

CAPT. BRANSON: Agreed.

LTCMDR. KELLER: Captain need I remind you that Starfleet Science Department put me in charge of this operation?

CAPT. BRANSON: No you don't need to remind me Commander but I'm in charge of this ship and its boarding party and if I say boarding is a no go then its a no go, you're just going to have to make due with sensor logs and recordings.

Keller hits the table.

LTCMDR. KELLER (anger): THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

CAPT. BRANSON: If you were a member of my crew I would have you thrown into the brig for your outburst Commander!

LTCMDR. KELLER: Well I'm not a member of your crew Captain and I will get aboard that vessel one way or another.

He storms out of the briefing room.

LTCMDR. WILLIAMS: Charming fellow.

CAPT. BRANSON: If you say so Steph continue to try to scan the inside of the vessel, I want to know if its safe to send over a boarding party or not dismissed.

The senior staff leaves the briefing room.

EXT-SPACE

The Enterprise and Yorktown are side by side over the large alien vessel.

INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)

Captain Branson turns to T'Lar.

CAPT. BRANSON: T'Lar anything on the sensor scans?

LT. T'LAR: Negative sensors still cannot penetrate the hull.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: Boarding still a no go?

CAPT. BRANSON: Yes.

Then Lieutenant Smith reports.

LTJG. SMITH: Sir we're being hailed by Commodore Austin at Starbase Six.

Captain Branson walks over to the helm and navigational stations.

CAPT. BRANSON: On screen.

Transparent viewer changes to the office of Commodore Joseph Austin at Starbase Six a Sigma-Class outpost along the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone border.

CAPT. BRANSON: Commodore Austin what can I do for you sir?

COMM. AUSTIN (viewer): Captain I just got off the com with Commander Keller and he says that you are refusing to send over a boarding party to an alien vessel?

CAPT. BRANSON: Yes, sir I made the choice not to send over a boarding party due to the lack of information on the inside of the vessel, it would be too risky to send over a boarding party without the Intel we need.

Commodore Austin interlaces his fingers on his desk.

COMM. AUSTIN (viewer): Captain you're ordered to follow Commander Keller's orders to the letter

Captain Branson turns to Commander Chin-Riley then back to the viewer.

CAPT. BRANSON: But sir we don't have enough information to send a boarding party over it would be risky.

COMM. AUSTIN (viewer): I understand John but the Science department has put him in charge of the operation, but I don't blame you if you are wanting to play it safe. But right now we can't afford to play it safe not after losing 430 men and women to the M-5 disaster on the Excalibur last year

Captain Branson puts his hands behind his back.

CAPT. BRANSON: So you want me to allow him to board a hostile vessel without knowing what is awaiting them?

COMM. AUSTIN (viewer): I want you to follow his orders to the letter you may outrank him John but he's the leading head of the Starfleet Science department

CAPT. BRANSON (sighs): Understood sir.

COMM. AUSTIN (viewer): Keep me posted John Commodore Austin out

Transmission ends.

CAPT. BRANSON: Una meet up with Commander Keller in the transporter room.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: Aye, sir.

Captain Branson turns to her.

CAPT. BRANSON: Take every precaution Una.

She nods and motions for T'Lar and Mason and they enter the lift as John isn't happy about what he's forced to do.

INT-USS ENTERPRISE TRANSPORTER ROOM

The boarding party gather in the transporter room as Commander Keller looks at them.

LTCMDR. KELLER: Phasers really?

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: Away Team guidelines sir we're not boarding a hostile vessel unarmed.

He rolls his eyes.

LTCMDR. KELLER (annoyed): Fine.

They stepped onto the pad.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: Set phasers to stun be ready to use them energize.

Chief Mackenzie inputs commands into the transporter console and activates it and the boarding party dematerialize.

CUT TO:
INT-HYPERION VESSEL CORRIDOR

The boarding party materialize.

LT. T'LAR (re: Tricorder): Traces of carbon, helium; parts per million asbestos.

LTJG. MASON: Sounds fun.

LTCMDR. KELLER: Not breathable, but it's not gonna corrode our suits either.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY (to com): Chin-Riley to Enterprise you read me?

CUT TO:
INT-USS ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE

CAPT. BRANSON (to com): We read you five by five Una how goes the expedition?

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY (com voice): So far no one has come towards us to greet us but we're continuing scanning for anything

CAPT. BRANSON (to com): Acknowledged Una we have a lock on you to beam you guys out at the first hint of trouble.

INT-HYPERION VESSEL CORRIDOR

LTCMDR. KELLER (to com): Captain you aren't beaming anyone back.

LTJG. MASON: If we're outnumbered then he has to sir.

He activates some sort of device.

INT-USS ENTERPRISE TRANSPORTER ROOM

CHIEF MACKENZIE: What the hell? Transporter room to bridge I just lost the transporter lock on the boarding party trying to reestablish now.

INT-HYPERION VESSEL CORRIDOR

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: You son of a bitch!

LTCMDR. KELLER: My mission my rules Commander I'll take Lieutenant T'Lar with me but she'll have to hand you her weapon.

Lieutenant T'Lar removes her phaser and hands it to Lieutenant Mason and both Keller and T'Lar head out.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: This isn't right.

Both Commander Keller and Lieutenant T'Lar are walking through the corridor.

LT. T'LAR (re: Tricorder): This bulkhead is impressive my scanner cannot get a clear reading on it.

Then they see a alien.

LT. T'LAR (raises an eyebrow): Interesting.

The alien looks at them.

INT-USS ENTERPRISE CAPTAIN'S READY ROOM

FLEET ADM. TUCKER (Monitor): You are not authorized to risk more lives for your own scientific curiosity. I want you to destroy whatever's over there while there's still a chance

CAPT. BRANSON: I can't do that sir.

FLEET ADM. TUCKER (Monitor): That's a direct order, Captain

CAPT. BRANSON: It's one I can't follow.

FLEET ADM. TUCKER (Monitor): Then you're relieved of duty Captain

CAPT. BRANSON: I await your arrival Enterprise out.

He shuts the transmission off as John is worried about the boarding party.

CAPT. BRANSON (sighs, to com): Keep me posted Una it's going to take awhile before we can beam you guys back.

INT-HYPERION VESSEL CORRIDOR

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY (to com): John Commander Keller has taken Lieutenant T'Lar with him to continuing exploring the vessel.

CAPT. BRANSON (com voice): Let's hope she has her phaser

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY (to com): Uh about that we have her phaser.

CAPT. BRANSON (com voice): What?

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY (to com): It was his request and his order John.

CAPT. BRANSON (Com voice): Una go get them we can't raise them

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY (To com): Aye, sir Well, join Starfleet, see the galaxy, and then some. (enters alien ship) John, Enterprise, anybody still read me? (notices alien) Wha…(the alien raises it's weapon) put that thing down. I don't want to have to fire. (the alien fires and she disappears)

INT-ALIEN VESSEL MAIN AREA

Commander Keller and T'Lar are chatting with the alien as Keller has a map out.

LTCMDR. KELLER: I assume you know where we are?, The outer edge of the Orion arm, thirty thousand light years from the center of the Milky Way galaxy. (alien points to planet) Coma Berenices, that's your constellation.

The Alien moves back.

LT. T'LAR: Something is happening here.

LTCMDR. KELLER (confused):Did we do something wrong?

(alien walks away)

LT. T'LAR: Do not do this guys.

LTCMDR. KELLER: Oh god.

LT. MITCHELL (Com voice): Sir we've got a bio-sign in Main Engineering

CAPT. BRANSON (to com): Branson to Engineering report?

LTCMDR. WILLIAMS (com voice): Engineering here

CAPT. BRANSON (to com): Who's in the reactor?

LTCMDR. WILLIAMS (com voice): No one sir

CAPT. BRANSON (confused): Strange.

LTJG. MITCHELL (com voice): Captain we're getting alot of sensor pings on all decks

LTJG. MITCHELL: What for?

CAPT. BRANSON: I haven't the foggiest.

LTCMDR. WILLIAMS: Maintenance and engineering.

CAPT. BRANSON (reholsters his phaser): We, we won't hurt you.

DR. CARLSON: Captain, it doesn't register. My scan shows nothing in front of us.

CAPT. BRANSON: Why are you here? (the alien doesn't respond) We are friendly.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: Uh, Commander, are you sure this is the right way?

LTCMDR. KELLER: Its the only way Commander.

LT. T'LAR: Reminds me of a science fiction story I read when I was a kid. These explorers found a downed space ship, just like we did, only after they went inside, it took off. Ship had not crashed at all.

LTJG. MASON: What happened to the people?

LT. T'LAR (raises an eyebrow): Well they were dissected, eaten.

LTJG. MASON: They were. Oh, I get it, har har. Har har de ahhh. (falls down hole)

INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE SICKBAY (RED ALERT)

Captain Branson, Doctor Carlson, and Lieutenant Mitchell are watching on the screen.

DR. CARLSON: This new life form is fascinating. There doesn't appear to be an interacting intelligence of freedom of will.

Captain Branson folds his arms.

CAPT. BRANSON: Meaning what?

DR. CARLSON: I'm not sure but whatever it is he didn't come from our galaxy.

CAPT. BRANSON (Sighs): Too bad T'Lar isn't onboard right now I'd have her attempt to find out where this thing came from.

DR. CARLSON: I can't believe that you put my wife on the boarding party.

CAPT. BRANSON: Steven we're not going to go through that again, now what about the sand residue?

Doctor Carlson leads him to the container holding the sand residue.

DR. CARLSON: I call attention to our earlier encounter with the alien. Notice the sand residue when it passes through the bulkhead.

LTJG. MITCHELL: Could this be silicon magnetics?

DR. CARLSON: Unknown at the moment.

Then lights go off.

CAPT. BRANSON (Surprised, to com): What the hell, Branson to bridge what's going on?

LT. SMITH (com voice): Propulsion, guidance systems, and life support have been shut down in sequence. We're dead in the water

LT. T'LAR: Your headache is back?

LTJG. MASON (nods): Yeah.

LTCMDR. KELLER: Mine too.

Lieutenant T'Lar scans the area.

LT. T'LAR: This looks like the source of their power. How can their signal still be broadcasting after a million years?

LTCMDR. KELLER: I don't think a million years means too much to them, Lieutenant.

INT-U.S.S. ENTERPRISE MAIN BRIDGE (YELLOW ALERT)

Captain Branson sits in the Captain's chair worried about his officers and the approaching Klingon vessels.

CAPT. BRANSON: Anything from the boarding party?

LTJG. SMITH: No sir.

LT. MITCHELL: We can't even fire our weapons or power our deflectors.

Lieutenant Smith walks over to Captain Branson.

LTJG. SMITH: I was able to work on the alien transmission and I think its addressed to someone.

He looks at the PADD.

CAPT. BRANSON (re: PADD): T'Lar's family.

LTJG. SMITH: Pretty much.

CAPT. BRANSON: Send it.

Before she could an alien appears and has it's weapon pointed at them.

CAPT. BRANSON: Its ok we're Commander T'Lar's crewmates.

CUT TO:
INT-HYPERION VESSEL MAIN AREA

LTCMDR. KELLER (to com): John you won't believe what's happened.

CAPT. BRANSON (on Enterprise): I'll match you story for story, but right now you've got about fifteen minutes to get out of there. We're sending another dropship.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: You're not going to tell them what really happened are you?

CAPT. BRANSON: The part where they took out all three Klingon vessels without breaking a sweat no not really.

LTCMDR. KELLER: John I want to say that I'm sorry for the way I acted during the mission, it was just rare that I got to be onboard an alien vessel.

CAPT. BRANSON: Its alright Scott I forgive you.

LT. T'LAR: I have a message that we can send to our new friends.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: What does it say?

LT. T'LAR: In the spirit of cooperation and knowledge, the residents of our planet welcome and invite you. Julia has translated it.

LTCMDR. CHIN-RILEY: With the Enterprise as the return address.

CAPT. BRANSON: All in favor of this?

The Senior staff raises their hands.

CAPT. BRANSON: Permission to transmit granted.

LT. T'LAR: Commander Keller would you do the honor?

She hands him the PADD.

LTCMDR. KELLER: Nah, why don't you do it John this is your ship and you are the one that saved everyone.

He hands it to Captain Branson who presses the button.
