Tin Man Returns is the 3rd episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in TNG Season 1.
Synopsis[]
While exploring the Beta Stromgeren system the crew of the Enterprise encounters the declared missing/destroyed living ship Tin Man aka Gomtuu, as well as the recently returned Tam Elbrun while investigating its return a Borg cube moving towards the system to assimilate Gomtuu can the Enterprise protect him this time or will they both be assimilated.

The Enterprise travels at impulse.
CPT. BRANSON'S [voice over]: Captain's log stardate 57879.4, The Enterprise is exploring the Beta Stromgren system after its sun went supernova back in 2366, so far it has been quiet no Romulan presence has been detected
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E
The crew are at their stations as Ensign Smith sits at the ops console and reports.
ENS. SMITH: Captain, I've completed the spectral evaluation of the outer shell of the mantle of the sun.
CPT. BRANSON: Ensign Carlson set course for Starbase 157 warp seven.
But before Ensign Carlson can follow the order.
[SENSORS BEEP RAPIDLY] As Ensign Smith reviews the readings.
ENS. SMITH: Captain, sensors are detecting an object bearing 2-3-4 mark 12 distance 4.5 light-years.
CPT. BRANSON: On screen.

LCDR. RO: John, is that?
CPT. BRANSON: Yeah its Tin Man.

The Enterprise faces Tin Man.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E
ANGLE - TRANSPARENT VIEWER [OPTICAL]
shows Tin Man.
CPT. BRANSON: Full scan of Tin Man.
Commander T'Mir turns to her science station runs her scans and reports.
LCDR. T'MIR: Tin Man has some damage along his outer hull but he's slowly recovering.
Captain Branson thinks.
CPT. BRANSON: Ro, take an away team over to Tin Man and see how he returned.
LCDR. RO: Aye, sir. Mason, T'Mir have Doctor Carlson meet us in the transporter room.
Both Lieutenant Mason and Commander T'Mir follow Commander Ro as relief officers take both the tactical and science stations.
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The Enterprise is at station keeping next to Tin Man.
INT. MAIN CORRIDOR, TIN MAN
[TRANSPORTER BEAM HUMS] As Commander Ro, Lieutenant Mason, Doctor Carlson, and Lieutenant Commander T'Mir materialized.
LCDR. RO: Wow, this is nice.
They walk along the corridor to the main compartment.
INT. PILOT CHAMBER, TIN MAN
They enter a small room narrowing at one end -- again, organic in appearance. The narrow end of the chamber walls pulse and writhe. Darkness, shadows, and lights which brighten and ebb behind the flesh-like walls.
LCDR. RO: Interesting.
They look around the chamber.
DR. CARLSON: Commander Ro.
Commander Ro walks over to where Doctor Carlson is at as they find a wounded Tam Elbrun.
TAM [groans]: O-Oh my head.
LCDR. RO: Easy Mister Elbrun you took a bad blow to the head I'm Lieutenant Ro Laren first officer of the Federation starship USS Enterprise.
Tam looks at her.
TAM: E-Enterprise?
LCDR. RO: That's right.
Doctor Carlson scans Tam with his medical tricorder.
DR. CARLSON: I've got to get him back to the Enterprise for further treatment we'll give you a neural supressant it should help with your telepathic abilities from reading our minds all at once.
TAM: Will it prevent me from sensing Gomtuu?
DR. CARLSON: I'll make a special blend that can only block out our thoughts but not Tin Man's.
TAM: Very well then Doctor.
DR. CARLSON [to com]: Carlson to Enterprise two to beam directly to sickbay have trauma teams standby.
[TRANSPORTER BEAM HUMS] As both Doctor Carlson and Tam dematerialized from the pilot's chamber.
LCDR. RO: Mister Mason take Mister Johnson and explore the rest of the ship me and T'Mir will remain here to figure out what happened and how they came back.
LTJG. MASON: Yes, ma'am.
Both Mason and Johnson EXITS the pilot chamber.
LCDR. T'MIR: Commander, if my people detected Tin Man's presences in this system then they'll surely send a ship to intercept.
LCDR. RO: I know T'Mir.
They both examine the chamber.
JUMP CUT TO:
INT. SURGICAL BAY/SICKBAY, USS ENTERPRISE
Tam's laying in the surgical biobed being treated for his injuries.
[SICKBAY DOORS WHOOSHED OPENED] As Captain Branson enters.
CPT. BRANSON: How is he?
DR. CARLSON: He'll live but I am concerned about his higher brain functions they match the scans the Voyager EMH took of an Ocampa woman named Kes in 2374.
CPT. BRANSON: When they were in an alliance with the Borg to fight Species 8472 I read the mission report is he well enough to speak?
DR. CARLSON: Yes, but please keep it brief.
Captain Branson walks to the entrance of the surgical bay that's blocked off by a force field the only one presence is the EMH as he's scanning Tam and treating his wounds.
EMH: He's willing to speak but as Doctor Carlson advised he's going to need his rest.
CPT. BRANSON: I understand thank you Doctor.
Tam lays sitting up on the biobed.
CPT. BRANSON: You'll have to forgive me of the force field we don't normally get people who were declared missing/killed in action on a daily basis.
TAM: It's all right Captain I forgive you but I am wondering where's Dee?
CPT. BRANSON: Deanna, she got married to William Riker in 2379 and they're both posted aboard the USS Titan currently exploring the galaxy.
Tam lays back smiles.
TAM: Dee found happiness I'm glad for her.
Captain Branson crosses his arms.
CPT. BRANSON: Mister Elbrun you were declared missing in action presumed killed in action by Starfleet and the Federation 14 years ago, how is it that you were able to find your way back here?
TAM: Me and Gomtuu were exploring the galaxy going to different areas of the galaxy as well trying to find out if there were anymore like him out there so he wouldn't have to be alone without a family but we found nothing until a few years ago we were exploring a sector of space that was full of darkness and dread several thousand voices speaking as one.
CPT. BRANSON: The Borg, we've had our dealing with them over the years but so far they've not tried anything since Voyager returned in 2377.
TAM: Me and Gomtuu only had a few seconds to escape before they could board us and assimilate us into the collective.
Doctor Carlson walks up next to Captain Branson.
CPT. BRANSON: So far you don't show signs of Borg implants Mister Elbrun but you should rest for awhile.
Tam nods.
INT. PILOT CHAMBER, TIN MAN
Commander James and a engineering are examining Tin Man's systems to figure out what makes him tick when Courtney sees something and she removes it with an engineering tool and is shocked to see that its of Borg design.
LCDR. JAMES [to com]: James to Ro we've got a problem.
[BLACKOUT, END OF ACT 1]

EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The Enterprise is next to Tin Man.
INT. SCIENCE LAB, USS ENTERPRISE-E
The device is on the table.
CPT. BRANSON: Are you sure that it was a good idea to bring it aboard?
LCDR. JAMES: Not really but I couldn't get a good scan of it without bringing it aboard.
ANGLE - SCIENCE MONITOR [OPTICAL]
shows the scans of the Borg device.
LCDR. RO: Where did you find this?
LCDR. JAMES: Behind some sort of console it seems that Elbrun was teaching Tin Man how to make Starfleet designed consoles and isolinear chips.
Commander T'Mir walks over to them.
LCDR. T'MIR: The device has since been deactivated it seems that is designed to download information.
CPT. BRANSON: Have Mister Mason inform Starfleet of the situation.
LCDR. RO: Aye, sir.
Commander Ro EXITS the science lab as the camera focuses on the Borg device.
INT. SURGICAL BAY/SICKBAY, USS ENTERPRISE-E
Tam is laying on the biobed sleeping tossing and turning as he's having visions.
BORG COLLECTIVE: You will be assimilated Resistance is Futile
Tam jolts up as he's sweating panting and looking around the bay.
[BLACKOUT, END OF ACT 2]

EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The Enterprise is towing Tin Man to Starbase 157.
INT. CAPTAIN'S READY ROOM, USS ENTERPRISE-E
RADM. BRANSON [monitor]: The Borg? We've not herd from them since Voyager's return in 2377
John sits at his desk.
CPT. BRANSON: I was just as surprised as you are dad.
RADM. BRANSON [monitor]: I've alerted all allied outposts in the sector we're not at pre-Dominion War levels to combat the Borg if they have returned, but I have advised Starfleet Command of the situation I'm leading a taskforce from Starbase 324 we should be at your position in a few hours
CPT. BRANSON: What do we do in the meantime?
RADM. BRANSON [monitor]: Continue to tow Tin Man to Starbase 157 and monitor for any transwarp signatures that may pop up from out of nowhere
CPT. BRANSON: Yes, sir.
RADM. BRANSON [monitor]: Branson out
[END TRANSMISSION] John leans back in the chair behind his desk thinking.
INT. SURGICAL BAY/SICKBAY, USS ENTERPRISE-E
TAM: I'm happy for you Dee you found happiness.
DEANNA [monitor]: Thank you Tam its good to see that you're alive and well I was worried when only Data came back to the Enterprise that day, but he told me that you were happy
TAM: Thank you for understanding Dee I was saddened to hear about Data after Captain Branson told me what happened to him.
Deanna feels sadness as well for the loss of her friend and comrade.
DEANNA [monitor]: Yeah, we're still feeling the effects of his death but I think it effected Captain Picard more then any of us cause he was like a mentor to Data when it came to understanding humans and how we operated and learned
TAM: When can we see each other?
DEANNA [monitor]: We're still exploring the edge of Federation Space it maybe sometime before we see each other but I'll speak to Will to see if I can get away for a few days
TAM: I hope to see you soon.
[END TRANSMISSION] Tam lays back in the biobed thinking when he felt a sharp pain on his hand as he looks at it and sees something moving through the skin and pops out its a Borg node.
NURSE TAKAHASHI [shocked]: DOCTOR CARLSON!
Steven sees this and is shocked.
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The Enterprise tows Tin Man to Starbase 157.
INT. OBSERVATION LOUNGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E
Captain Branson looks out the windows.
[OBSERVATION LOUNGE DOORS WHOOSHED OPENED] As Commander T'Mir enters.
LCDR. T'MIR: You've asked to see me sir?
Captain Branson turns to her.
CPT. BRANSON: Yes. T'Mir please have a seat.
Commander T'Mir sits at the table.
CPT. BRANSON: I understand that this maybe a bit uncomfortable for you being close to your home but yet unable to return to it.
LCDR. T'MIR: It has been difficult for me and my mother in recent years but we have managed to make the most of it after seeing what the Federation is capable of during the war with the Dominion.
CPT. BRANSON: We're not all mean and brutal we put that behind us over a decade ago when the Vulcans helped us recover from World War 3, but I want you to know that I understand when I was in recovery from Wolf 359 I thought I'd never be able to remain in Starfleet this long we lost so much in that conflict with the Borg.
[COM CHIRPS] As a frantic Doctor Carlson comes over the com.
DR. CARLSON [com voice]: Carlson to Branson
CPT. BRANSON [to com]: Branson here go ahead.
DR. CARLSON [com voice]: You need to get down here right away and bring a security team with you
CPT. BRANSON [to com]: What is it Steven?
CUT TO:
INT. DOCTOR CARLSON'S OFFICE/SICKBAY, USS ENTERPRISE-E
Doctor Carlson and Nurse Takahashi are in his office hiding, as half-assimilated Tam Elbrun attempts to break through the force field around the entrance to his office.
DR. CARLSON [to com]: Its Mister Elbrun he's been assimilated by the Borg and he's trying to assimilate us! But I've increased the power to the force field around my office.
CPT. BRANSON [com voice]: We're on our way sit tight!
DR. CARLSON [to com]: Don't worry we're not going anywhere anytime soon.
Tam's still trying to get through the force field but ignores both Saskai and Steven and walks over to the console attempting to access communications to contact the nearest Borg vessel.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E
ENS. SMITH: Commander, someone is accessing our communication system to send a transmission on a Borg frequency.
LCDR. RO: Lock them out!
Ensign Smith inputs commands into the ops console.
ENS. SMITH: I can't they're using Borg encryption!
INT. SICKBAY, USS ENTERPRISE-E
[SICKBAY DOORS WHOOSHED OPENED] As Captain Branson, Lieutenant Mason, Ensign Johnson, and Ensign Tyler shows up and fires their phasers at him, Tam turns to face them as he advances towards them as they fire their phasers but his Borg shields prevent the beams from striking him.
CPT. BRANSON: Damn it he's adapted!
John holsters his phaser and gets the I-Mod and fires it off and it sends Tam flying as he's knocked out cold as they enter the room as John still has the I-mod aimed at him.
DR. CARLSON [re: medical tricorder]: I've still got a pulse but its barely there.
CPT. BRANSON: Do what you can for him Steven.
DR. CARLSON: Yes, sir.
CPT. BRANSON [to com]: Branson to Ro was that transmission sent out?
LCDR. RO [com voice]: Yes, sir. We've detected a transwarp conduit a Borg vessel is on approach
CPT. BRANSON [to com]: Red alert all hands battle stations Johnson, Tyler you two stay here and make sure that Tam doesn't do anything Borg like and if he does you've got my order to put him down.
ENS. JOHNSON: Aye, sir.
ENS. TYLER: Yes, sir.
Both Captain Branson and Lieutenant Mason EXITS sickbay.
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
A Borg Cube approaches the Enterprise and Tin Man.
[BLACKOUT, END OF ACT 3]
Act 4[]
FADE IN
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E [RED ALERT]
[TURBOLIFT DOORS WHOOSHED OPENED] As Captain Branson and Lieutenant Mason walk onto the bridge as Mason relieves the officer at Tactical and Commander Ro vacates the Captain's chair.
CPT. BRANSON: Report?
LCDR. RO: The Borg vessel's moving into range.
CPT. BRANSON: On screen.
ANGLE - TRANSPARENT VIEWER [OPTICAL]
shows the Borg Cube moving towards the ship.
ENS. SMITH: Long-range tactical vessel. Transwarp capabilities. Ablative hull armor.
[COM CHIRPS] As Lieutenant Mason checks his console read out.
LTJG. MASON: We're being hailed by the vessel.
CPT. BRANSON: Let's hear it.
BORG COLLECTIVE [com voice]: We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile
CPT. BRANSON: Break off your attack or we'll open fire.
BORG COLLECTIVE [com voice]: Irrelevant
CPT. BRANSON: Is it? You've scanned our vessel you know we can match for your fire power.
BORG COLLECTIVE [com voice]: You will be assimilated
[END TRANSMISSION]
[BOOM!] As everyone braces themselves.
LTJG. MASON: Shields holding sir.
CPT. BRANSON: Helm evasive pattern delta seven but keep us between the Borg and Tin Man.
ENS. CARLSON: Aye, sir.
CPT. BRANSON: Return fire!
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The Enterprise keeps between the Borg and Tin Man as she fires off several phaser beams that struck the sphere's outer hull causing explosions to rip through the vessel.
INT. CORRIDOR, BORG CUBE
[BOOM!] A shower of sparks erupt.
BORG COLLECTIVE: Regenerate primary shield matrix, remodulate weapons
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E [RED ALERT]
LTJG. MASON: They're currently regenerating their primary shield matrix they're wide open.
CPT. BRANSON: Fire torpedoes full spread!
Lieutenant Mason taps commands into the tactical console.
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The Enterprise unleashed a torpedo and phaser barrage at the port side of the Borg Cube causing massive damage to the section of the cube, but the Cube fires off a barrage of disruptor torpedoes that struck the Enterprise's port shield armor.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E [RED ALERT]
[BOOM!] A huge shower of sparks erupt from the ceiling and Master Display Monitor.
CPT. BRANSON: Damage report!
LTJG. MASON: Port shields down to 56%!
LCDR. RO: Bring us about!
Ensign Carlson taps commands into the helm station.
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The Enterprise pitches to starboard as a Federation battlegroup shows up being led by the USS Korolev a Galaxy-class dreadnought the original design of the new class of ship.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS KOROLEV [RED ALERT]
The crew are at their stations.
RADM. BRANSON [to com]: Enterprise this is Rear Admiral James Branson of the USS Korolev we've got your back.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E [RED ALERT]
CPT. BRANSON [to com]: Better late then never sir.
RADM. BRANSON [com voice]: What's to report?
CPT. BRANSON [to com]: We managed to deal some damage to them their currently regenerating their primary shield matrix sending data to you now.
Ensign Smith taps commands into the ops console to transmit the data.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS KOROLEV [RED ALERT]
The ops officer turns from her console and nods at Admiral Branson.
RADM. BRANSON: We've got it John.
[END OF TRANSMISSION] As Admiral Branson walks back to the Captain's chair.
RADM. BRANSON [to com]: Branson to all ships break and attack!
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The taskforce attacks the Borg cube swarming the vessel like in the attempt to stop the Borg as Wolf 359 and the Battle of Sector 001, as the Cube fires its tractor beams and torpedoes at the attacking Starfleet vessels.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E [RED ALERT]
CPT. BRANSON: Mister Mason coordinate our fire with the Korolev tactical officer.
LTJG. MASON: Aye, sir.
[BOOM!] As showers of sparks erupt from the ceiling and Master Display Monitor that causes some crewmen to back away covering their faces.
ENS. SMITH: Forward shields down to 10%!
CPT. BRANSON: Re-route emergency power to forward shields.
LTJG. MASON: Aye, sir.
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The battle isn't going well for the Federation forces as they're sustaining heavy losses the USS Yorktown-A fires her phasers and photon torpedoes.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS YORKTOWN-A [RED ALERT]
LTJG. JONES: The Cube's port shields are destabilizing Captain!
CPT. SMITH: Open fire all torpedoes!
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The two launchers on the saucer section of the California-class vessel unleash a fully volley of torpedoes as the orange energy blots struck the port side of the cube scoring deadly hits.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS YORKTOWN-A [RED ALERT]
ENS. SAMPSON: The Cube's port side has sustained heavy damage ma'am.
CPT. SMITH [to com]: Yorktown to Enterprise John the cube's port side has sustained massive damage they're wide open for a quantum torpedo strike!
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E [RED ALERT]
CPT. BRANSON: Let's see if we can open that breach a bit wider Enterprise to all ships target all your opens onto the following coordinates fire at my command.
ENS. SMITH: Sir, the coordinates you've indicated doesn't appear to be a vital system?
CPT. BRANSON: If Data trusted Jean-Luc then trust me Julia.
He walks back to the Captain's chair.
LTJG. MASON: The fleet's responding sir they're standing by.
CPT. BRANSON: Fire!
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The fleet fires their weapons at the breach on the cube as explosions rip through the hull of the Cube as each ship fires their phasers and photon torpedoes as the Enterprise then unleashed a quantum torpedo volley as the four torpedoes enter the breach a massive explosion rips through the cube as the ships of the fleet gets clear of the explosion but one ship didn't make it clear.
INT. MAIN BRIDGE, USS ENTERPRISE-E [RED ALERT]
LTJG. MASON: The cube has been destroyed sir.
CPT. BRANSON: Scan for a Borg Sphere.
Ensign Smith taps commands into the ops console and reports.
ENS. SMITH: Sensors show no other Borg vessels in the sector sir.
CPT. BRANSON: Continue on course for Starbase 157.
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The fleet is at Starbase 157 as Tin Man is next to the Starfleet outpost.
CPT. BRANSON'S [voice over]: Captain's log stardate 53454.4, After a brief battle with the Borg the Federation taskforce has escorted Tin Man to Starbase 157 for further repairs and study the right way not the way the Romulans were wanting to do to him
INT. SURGICAL BAY/SICKBAY, USS ENTERPRISE-E
Deanna is with Tam who's sitting on the surgical bay with his knees up and him rubbing the back of his head as Doctor Carlson's scanning him with a medical tricorder.
CPT. BRANSON'S [voice over, continuing]: As for Tam Elbrun he's made a full recovery from his brief time as a Borg drone but I fear that what happened to him will stick with him for the rest of his life Commander Troi was able to get the base to help him recover the same way she helped Captain Picard after his ordeal with the Borg I can only hope she can help him heal
INT. CAPTAIN'S READY ROOM, USS ENTERPRISE-E
John looks out the window at Tin Man.
JOHN: It seems that I owe you one Jessica.
JESSICA [smiles]: Damn right you do John.
JOHN: Maybe, I could have your sister spend more time with you?
JESSICA: I was thinking more of a date the next time you're in the sector you and me dinner surprise me.
Jessica EXITS the ready room as John thinks.
EXT. SPACE [OPTICAL]
The Enterprise sits in the drydock berth receiving repairs.
