The Type-15 shuttlepod was a small Federation shuttlecraft in operation in the late 24th century. The main production base for these light short-range sublight craft was Starbase 134's Integration Facility at Rigel VI.
Service history[]
Type 15 shuttlepods were introduced sometime prior to 2365. They were part of the standard shuttle complement on Galaxy-class, Renaissance-class, and Nebula-class starships.
Specifications[]
In its standard configuration, the Type-15 shuttlepod could accomodate two crewmembers, a pilot and a systems manager. It was equipped with two 500 millicochrane impulse engines which gave it a maximum speed of 12,800 meters per second, eight DeFI 657 hot gas RCS thrusters and three sarium krellide storage cells. It had a mass of 0.86 metric tonnes. (TNG reference: Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual)
Technical data[]
Type 15 shuttlepods were equipped with two long range 750 millicochrane impulse driver engines, also known as impulse nacelles, which were located on either side of the craft. The shuttlepod was also equipped with eight DeFI 657 hot gas RCS thrusters, also known as microfusion thrusters. In addition to a primary deuterium supply, power was provided by three sarium krellide cells. (TNG: episodes: "In Theory", "Descent" display graphic)
These shuttles did not have warp capability. ({e|TNG|Time Squared}})
However, if launched from a starship at warp, they could travel at warp for an undetermined period of time. Type 15 shuttlepods were also equipped with deflector shields. (TNG episode: "The Mind's Eye")
The normal flight crew was two pilots, although the shuttle could easily be operated by a single person. Some configurations even included only a single pilot seat. (TNG episode: "The Mind's Eye")
The ship also had a small cargo space, which could be used for carrying supplies. The cargo area was loaded and accessed through a hatch in the back of the craft. (TNG episode: "The Most Toys")
The type 15 was not normally outfitted to carry passengers, but in some configurations a bench was located in the cargo area for an additional passenger. In this configuration, the cargo hatch included a round emergency egress point, which could be blown away by explosive charges. (TNG episode: "Power Play")
Other configurations[]
Type-15A[]
The Type-15A variant was slightly heavier than the standard Type-15 at 0.97 metric tonnes. It also had a higher top speed of 13,200 m/sec.
Type 16[]
The Type-16 variant was classed as a medium short-range sublight shuttle. It was a lengthened version of the Type-15 at 4.8 meters long and had more powerful engines, but a lower top speed. The two 750 millicochrane impulse driver engines propelled the Type-16 to a maximum speed of 12,250 m/sec. It was mounted with eight DeFI 635 hot gas RCS thrusters and four sarium krellide storage cells. (TNG reference: Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual)
