The Type 38 shuttlecraft is a technologically advanced type of shuttlecraft employed by a possible version of 32nd century Starfleet of the burn universe.

History[]

In 3190, several type 38 shuttles were docked in the Federation Headquarters shuttlebay during and following Federation President Laira Rillak's address to the new Starfleet Academy class. The shuttlebay was again full of this class of shuttle when Doctor Kovich assigned Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly on a special mission.

In 3190, a shuttle of this type was parked at Federation Headquarters after the Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly and her team of cadets returned from Kokytos. Again in 3190, over the public address system at Federation Headquarters, several Starfleet Academy cadets were ordered to report to this shuttle for immediate departure.

Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly was assigned one of these shuttles to take five cadets to a training mission to the moon Geryon. En route, the shuttle was damaged by a rogue gamma-ray burst and crash landed on the neighboring moon Kokytos. After being recovered and repaired, the shuttle transported Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly from the USS Discovery to Federation Headquarters.

Also in 3190, a shuttle of this type was used as a transport by Captain Michael Burnham for her mission to Haz Mazaro's Karma Barge on Porathia. She was accompanied in the mission by Lieutenant Commander Joann Owosekun. Later, Captains Michael Burnham and Saru, Doctor Hugh Culber, and Lt. Commander Keyla Detmer took shuttlecraft DSC-09 to Species 10-C's homeworld to learn more about them before making first contact.

Thousands of shuttles of this class were used during the evacuation of Earth, Luna and Titan when the Dark Matter Anomaly began to threaten the Sol system.

Interior[]

A typical shuttle of this class featured a crisp white interior, brightly lit up through a series of strip lights that automatically adjust colour depending on current alert status. It has at least four standard crew stations in the front with the commanding officers chair in the center of the room and two additional stations just behind the commanding chair. Wide transparent windows cover the interior providing a panoramic view of the outside with a computerised overlay.

Emergency medical, engineering and weapon kits are stored in the floorboards with easy access to starfleet personnel and cadets.

The back of the shuttle contains a replicator capable of fabricating drinks and food while on missions and there is also an airlock to the outside though transporters are traditionally used for ingress and egress.

Defense systems[]

  • Protective screens: The Type 38 was equipped with an ablative generator that deployed nearly impenetrable defensive armor around the viewports in case of an emergency.
  • Deflector shields: It is protected by deflector shields composed out of multi-layered energetic distortion screens containing a high concentration of graviton particles. The symmetrical bubble around the exterior aids in the safe absorption of shockwaves, kinetic impacts, energy discharge, and et cetera.

Tachyon firing system[]

Type 38 shuttles are capable of firing concentrated pulses of tachyon particles at a target usually on a shielded starship that can disrupt shields, forcing the ship to remodulate and offering a brief window of opportunity to use transporters or fire on the vessel. Despite the temporal accords, tachyon weapons such as this is apparently allowed but rarely used on larger starships given the power of the tachyons compared to the size of the opponent's deflector shields.

Phasers[]

Type 38 shuttles are armed with phaser emitter cannons designed to fire pulsed beams of directed tetryon plasma particles at a target utilising automatic frequency rotation to combat enemy adaption.

Stealth systems[]

  • Cloaking screen: Shuttles of this type are equipped with a highly advanced cloaking device that was proclaimed "perfect." It emitted no tachyons and left no residual anti-protons, the two ways that a cloaked ship could be tracked and located. Thus, when active, a Type 38 shuttlecraft could not be located or tracked beside from verified users of Starfleet starbases and starships.

Propulsion[]

The class is capable of entering planetary atmospheres for landing and is capable of travelling underwater provided minor modifications prior.

Sub-light[]

For travel at sub-light speeds, Type 38 shuttles use a newtonian-thrust-based reaction system in the form of vectored thrust nozzle assemblies aligned on the aft section built sleekly into the nacelles curved around the hull. They are powered by two micro-fusion reactors using deuterium fuel to create helium plasma. A known speed, not clear if it is maximum or minimum, is 0.14 percent of the speed of light or 419 709.441 m / s.

Warp[]

It possesses a Federation standard warp drive that functions through running highly energised plasma through the unique composition of the warp coils thereby creating a subspace field ie; a discrete bubble of subspace is temporarily merged into normal space around the exterior of the craft. To explain the phenomena, under normal circumstances subspace and normal space do not interact, but the high amount of energy and the unique properties of the warp coils contained in the thinly disguised nacelles allows a "blending" of the dimensions, surrounding the ship in the aforementioned subspace field. By manipulating the way plasma is moved through the warp coils, they alter the nature of the subspace field, such as causing it to move in a specific direction therefore actually accelerating the subspace "bubble" to faster-than-light velocities without violating laws of relativity as the ship contained within the field is technically stationary.

The cruising velocity for Type 38 shuttles are warp factor 5 which is 213.75 times the speed of light or .5 light years/per 20 hours. The maximum rated speed is warp factor 7 which is over 3 times faster at 656.14 times the speed of light or .5 light years per 6.68 hours. Overall, these shuttles are by far slower than virtually all Starfleet starships and therefore not suited for what would be considered deep space travel in one of these vessels.

Computer systems[]

This shuttlecraft type had a threat assessment system, which was susceptible to interference if the foe fired antimatter based weapons such as photon torpedoes. Equipment included in these shuttles included black hole analyzers, extreme ultraviolet spectrometer, near infrared mapping spectrometer, energetic particle spectrometer, magma sensors, and sensors for mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, and radio spectrum.

Additional standard systems included sensors and proximity scans, long range communications for a maximum of 20 light years without relays and a minimum of 800 light years with relays. A crash landing would also activate the shuttle's emergency distress beacon on impact - It would send the beacon on all Federation subspace channels using a narrow theta band frequency shifted into background radiation domain.

It uses a combination of nano-gel (Optical data network) and organic circuitry (32nd century version of bio-neural gel packs) with angular isolinear chips used as memory storage hubs.
