The Type-8 shuttlecraft was a class of small Federation Starfleet shuttlecraft in operation in the late 24th and early 25th centuries.

History

The Type-8 shuttlecraft was introduced into service in the late 2360s decade and was the standard shuttlecraft design incorporated into many starship classes, including the Intrepid-class and are part of the vessel's standard shuttlecraft loadout, although generally the Type 9 shuttlecraft was preferred over the Type 8. (VOY episode: "Caretaker", et al.)

The class continued in Starfleet service into the early 2410s, with the Tereshkova still in service in the year 2410. (STO - "The Iconian War" mission: "Uneasy Allies")

Livery

In the 25th century, the design of the Type-8 shuttlecraft allowed its mothership's commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at starbases. These options were numbered Types and Veteran. (STO - "The Klingon War" mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")

Technical data

The type 8 was very similar to the older type 6 shuttles. There were only minor differences in the size of the port and starboard windows, and the warp nacelles resembled those of an Intrepid-class starship. Internally the type 8 was virtually indistinguishable from the type 6.

Type 8 shuttles were composed of duranium, magnesite, and carbon. They were not normally armed, but it was possible to fit the craft with dual phasers. The type 8's phasers were powerful enough to destroy small Kazon vessels. (VOY episode: "Initiations")
