Service history[]
Inspiration[]
The Jefferies-class Enterprise was based on the historically significant USS Enterprise active in the 23rd century. Throughout its decades of service, the original Enterprise underwent several refits. At the end of Captain James T. Kirk's historic five-year mission in 2270, there were proposals for a radical reconstruction of the ship.
Some of these designs were rejected. (SOTL calendar: Ships of the Line 2007 August image: "Plenty of Letters")
The Enterprise was relaunched in 2273 as a Enterprise-class vessel. (TOS movie: The Motion Picture)
One of the alternative designs was an intermediary step between the 2260s-era Constitution and its 2270s refit. (The Official Starships Collection Issue Bonus Edition 08: "USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Phase II Concept")
In an alternate timeline, this version of the Enterprise became a reality and embarked on a second five-year mission under Captain Kik in 2273. (TOS - Waypoint comic: "The Fear")
Construction and launch[]
At the end of 2410, Starfleet began a new shipbuilding project that focused on refitting classes represented by legendary starships throughout Federation history. This included various iterations of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701. This presented the opportunity to launch the originally rejected configuration now called the Jefferies class. Three of the legendary miracle worker light cruisers - a legendary starship classification combining the miracle worker ship and light cruiser types - were designated NCC-1701, including a Jefferies-class prototype. All three, and the other vessels of this new starship category, shared the same capabilities. While of different classes, their components were interchangeable. In Earth Spacedock's shipyard interface, and interfaces of other aligned and Federation shipyards, a rotatable graphic of the Enterprise was used to represent the Jefferies-class. (STO - "Legacy" mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
