The USS Luna (initially NX-80101, later NCC-80101) was a 24th century Federation starship, a Luna-class science vessel and prototype of its class, in Starfleet service from the 2370s decade. Its commanding officer was Captain Fujikawa. (TTN novel: Taking Wing, "Luna Class Concept Notes"; TTN novel: Sword of Damocles, Titan Fold-out)

Service history and disposition[]

Development[]

Luna 2409

The moon Luna

Upon the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole in 2369, the Starfleet engineer Doctor Xin Ra-Havreii began working on design for the Luna-class at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards pf Mars. The project was suspended during the Dominion War but renewed afterwards.

The Luna, and the ships of its class, were named for moons of the Sol star system. Earth's moon Luna was this ship's namesake.

Commander Ra-Havreii was aboard for the launch of the NX-registered USS Luna in the year 2372, under the command of Captain Fujikawa. An accident in the engine room led to the death of several crewmembers. Although Doctor Ra-Havreii was cleared of any wrongdoing, the Efrosian man blamed himself. (TTN novel: Taking Wing)

Active duty[]

In 2378, Ra-Havreii boarded the USS Titan and requested that he remained aboard for the duration of its shakedown cruise, a request which was granted by Captain William T. Riker. He was later assigned as chief engineer following an engineering disaster which killed Nidani Ledrah. (TTN novel: Taking Wing)

In the 25th century, Luna-class vessels were rated as tier 6 reconnaissance science vessels.

In 2400, the Luna joined a Starfleet armada coordinated by the Singularity to deflect a massive energy burst from a newly forming transwarp conduit. (PIC episode: "Farewell")

By the turn of the 2410s decade, the Luna-class design had proven successful enough to be iterated into sister classes. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Alternate timelines[]

Up to 2381 in the First Splinter timeline, Titan chief engineer Ra-Havreii wrestled with his guilt for the Luna engine room accident. (ST - Destiny novel: Gods of Night)

In a permutation of the mirror universe where the second Terran Empire rose to prominence, the ISS Luna (NCC-80101) was one of several Terran Starfleet ships to bear the name. The Luna was involved in crossovers with the primary universe from 2409. (STO - Cardassian Struggle mission: "Defend the Beta Ursae Sector Block")
