Crew overview[]
Regarding command level officers. Each shift would need an officer in charge. 'Alpha' shift would be overseen by the Commanding Officer, however there are three different options for the other shifts: #1. the First and Second Officers are standalone roles and each commands their own shifts, the other two shifts have a designated Watch Officer, a command division officer in training and 3. the other shifts are overseen by one of the bridge officers. Overall, there are around 4 standard command level officers on a typical Yang class vessel.
In the 32nd century there is no need for separate helm, nav and comm officers, with the first two covered by the Conn Officer and the last added to the list of duties for the Ops Officer. Yang class vessels have 3-4 officers per shift: Conn, Ops and Tactical. There is also space for a science officer who is usually not on duty unless undergoing surveys, experiments, tests, scans, etc. Overall, there are around 8 officers assigned to work on the bridge - one of each required station per shift.
Medical crew are limited to one EMH (emergency medical hologram) who contain the entire Starfleet Medical Database wrapped up in personality algorithms. They are technically projections of light and forcefields which allow them to interact with solid matter. Every deck of the Yang class have holo-emitters and thanks to their mobile emitters invented in the 29th century, EMH's have freedom to travel off the ship when authorised. Subsequently, they are multi-trained in diplomacy and social sciences, so they could be a cultural advisor to the CO on first contact missions. The EMH is traditionally supported by 1-2 nurses who are biological in nature.
The security team for Yang class vessels consist of seven individuals. There is the Tactical Officer who coordinates six highly trained guards that traditionally roam around the ship seeing to the security of key systems, performing weapons checks, running drills, etc. The bridge officer who mans the tactical station is technically apart of this division bringing the total up to 8 (or 9 including their shift replacement), however, their place is on the bridge and therefore do not usually report to the security chief.
For engineering, there is a shift supervisor as well as a few general engineers who perform maintenance, standard repairs, and etc. Yang class vessels also employ experts in certain fields such as in computers, environmental substems, propulsion, structural, etc. The specialists are split up so their individual talents can be utilised throughout the day without having to compete for resources. For example, alpha shift would have diagnostics and impulse and sensors, beta would have environmental, damage control and FTL systems, and gamma would have computer, power and structural. Overall, Yang class ships have around 10 engineering personnel.

Design[]
Yang class vessels appear similar to most Starfleet vessels following a comparable saucer-shaped primary hull suspended between a pair of nacelles attached to a slender secondary hull through nacelle pylons. However, the saucer was more delta shaped and did not utilise magnetic detachment unlike other ships in the 32nd century fleet. This type has a grey external colour theme and its nacelles glowed blue while the bussard collectors glowed orange.
Starship section design[]
With a crew of just over thirty, life on board a Yang class ship meant knowing everyone on the ship. There is often less of a divide between officers and enlisted personnel than on larger ships, simply because there are fewer communal spaces to allow for such a separation. This is also due to mission parameters that often require extensive collaboration between departments and laboratories.
The Yang-class featured a unique bridge, It's most striking feature was its overall transparent roof dome. The bridge had a white, black and steel color scheme, and adopted a Library Computer Access and Retrieval Software system with blue elements and integrated features for holographic displays on every console as well as programmable matter.
The bridge lacked the standard viewscreen typically integrated into the ship's bulkhead and was instead dominated by a transparent roof dome for direct visual contact with the exterior that was overlapped with a holographic user interface and programmable matter 3D projections. The captain's chair was located at the center of the bridge and had holographic displays and consoles.
This type of starship had a communal mess hall, with at least three food replicators. Each replicator had two dispensing slots with a transparent sliding door in a stacked formation, with the higher one being slightly smaller than the lower one. Once the order was replicated along with a tray and any eating utensils, the door automatically retracted upward, and the tray extended outwards so that it could be removed from the slot.
Brigs onboard such vessels were used to contain criminals, fugitives, and others who posed a security risk and must be detained. Individuals confined to the brig were restricted behind a multi-adaptive forcefield. Furthermore, the Brig was connected to the security office which also functioned as the armory.
Deck layout[]
- Deck 1 - Bridge, conference room.
- Deck 2 - Crew quarters, bathrooms with sonic showers, public locker room, mess hall, sickbay
- Deck 3 - Engineering, shuttlebay level one, computer core
- Deck 4 - Cargo Bay, shuttlebay level two, brig/security office including armory
- Deck 5 - Deuterium tanks, antimatter storage/generator
Propulsion[]
The ship was capable of entering a range of planetary atmospheres, as well as landing on at least some types of planetary surfaces. Towards this end it was equipped with a single, large landing strut located beneath the ship's center of gravity. It was wide and sturdy enough to withstand skidding across surfaces.
Sub-light[]
Yang class vessels can travel through space at sub-light speeds via nuclear fusion engines in which the plasma from the fusion reactor powers a massive magnetic coil to propel the ship. It is a form of a magnetohydrodynamic drive called the Hyper-Impulse engine that is capable of propelling the ship at speeds just under 0.75 percent/the speed of light. This magnetic system also utilizes the Space-Time Driver Coil to operate effectively at sub-light speeds which produce a non-propulsive symmetrical subspace field that helps the ship to accelerate, decelerate, and maneuver by effectively lowering it's apparent mass.
Furthermore, ships of this type are equipped with a Newtonian-thrust-based reaction system in the form of two assemblies of vectored thrust nozzles aligned on the far rear of the secondary hull with two smaller and thinner assemblies on the back of the saucer dish. They are powered by fusion reactors using deuterium fuel to create helium plasma. These rocket-like engines are typically employed for a boost of velocity, specialised maneuvering, et cetera. A known speed of the Impulse thrusters is 0.17 percent of the speed of light and are generally used to bolster the magnetic drive bringing the total sub-light speed up to 0.92 c which is 0.8 percent less than that of Warp 1 AKA the speed of light.
FTL[]
Transwarp[]
Unlike a regular Transwarp drive or coil, Yang class vessels are a test bed to trial out a theoretical propulsion system as an alternative to other methods. It was originally designed before the burn but with Ni'var's withdrawal and the cataclysm of the Burn, the project was scrapped.
It is referred to as the "pathway drive" and is based on ancient iconian gateways. The drive works by tunneling through subspace apertures greatly exceeding traditional warp speeds and enabling rapid transport throughout the galaxy. Also unlike warp drive, the pathway drive did not require dilithium or even benamite like the quantum slipstream drive. Instead, it was powered by an unnamed material which the replicators are capable of reproducing creating a self-sustaining system.
While the exact speed is unknown, the spore drive installed on the USS Discovery is said to be faster and judging by visual accounts this statement is true.
Warp[]
Yang class starships possess a Federation standard warp drive that functions through running highly energised plasma through the unique composition of the warp coils thereby creating a subspace field ie; a discrete bubble of subspace is temporarily merged into normal space around the exterior of the craft. To explain the phenomena, under normal circumstances subspace and normal space do not interact, but the high amount of energy and the unique properties of the warp coils contained in the nacelles allows a "blending" of the dimensions, surrounding the ship in the aforementioned subspace field. By manipulating the way plasma is moved through the warp coils, they alter the nature of the subspace field, such as causing it to move in a specific direction therefore actually accelerating the subspace "bubble" to faster-than-light velocities without violating laws of relativity as the ship contained within the field is technically stationary.
The maximum speed of the warp drive installed on typical vessels of this type is Warp Factor 9.9997 which is 79,240.22 times the speed of light or around 1 light year/per 11 minutes or 20 light years/per 2 hours and 20 minutes. This is somewhat slower than the heavy cruisers such as Janeway class vessels or Worf class ships.
Enhanced warp drive[]
Unlike most other vessels, Yang class ships utilise protomatter that it typically gathers from a class 1 nebula. The addition of this highly dangerous and traditionally unstable element greatly augments the speed of it's warp drive. When activated, a third nacelle was constructed out of programmable matter from the tail of the ship while the two main nacelles were angled into a lower position.
Tactical systems[]
- Tractor beam generators: It features three tractor beam emitters that can project a beam of gravity outward at a target thus allowing the manipulation of its trajectory.
Weapons[]
While not the most heavily armed ship class in Starfleet, the Yang class nevertheless was sufficient in a wide range of offensive or defensive combat situations.
Phasers[]
It was equipped with eleven strategically positioned phaser arrays: eight on the saucer and three on the secondary hull, which consist of strip emitter banks and fire pulsed beams of tetryon plasma particle discharge at a target with a routine frequency rotation program to prevent the enemy from adapting easily.
Torpedoes[]
It is secondly armed two forward-facing fixed torpedo launch banks at the bow of the saucer and another which faced in the aft direction. They are each capable of shooting out self-propelled torpedoes that possess photon warheads delivering a payload of explosive antimatter and a flood of ion radiation.
The class' complement is 38 type 7 and class 10 photon torpedoes. The type 7 have an explosive yield of 25 isotons or 62 megatons while the class 10 have a yield of 200 isotons roughly equalling 496 megatons about 8 times more powerful than the former.
Stealth[]
- Cloak screen: The class is fitted with a highly advanced cloaking device that was proclaimed "perfect." It emitted no tachyons and left no residual anti-protons, the two ways that a cloaked ship could be tracked and located. Thus, when cloaked, a Yang class ship is virtually impossible to find.
Defenses[]
- Deflector shields: For protection, Yang class vessels utilise Deflector shields with a protected matrix of multi-layered energetic distortion screens containing a high concentration of gravitons. Overall, the generators collectively form a symmetrical oscillating bubble around the exterior aiding in the safe absorption of shockwaves, kinetic impacts, energy discharge, and et cetera. They are self-regenerative so long as their backup isolinear cores are intact.
Energy generation[]
Yang class ships utilise an antimatter x matter reactor core which generated enormous amounts of power through explosive collisions releasing pure light (energy) which is then harnessed directly into FTL as well as several other major systems. It is regulated through a matrix of magnets and Dilithium. Protomatter can also be fed into the controlled reaction at a slow yet gradual pace to increase the level of energy generated.
Secondly, ships of this type have several spherical fusion reactors that are fueled by Deuterium that make use of a nuclear fusion process to generate energised plasma that is then distributed throughout the ship via a polaric conduit managed EPS grid.
